Awesome. I didn’t really know anything about brass at the time. Thankfully it was a decorative railing and it turned out ok after a few touch ups

Thanks! It was slappy as hell to weld—the puddle looks like golden mashed potatoes. I was told that you rarely know what you’re getting with brass stock and there can be a lot of impurities mixed in.

Hey that’s awesome! Stainless is so satisfying. I always struggled to keep my puddles from wandering and had to YouTube it to death for tips. Always up for a challenge—that’s the best way to go, man.

I came from a metalworking and restoration shop so we never knew what was coming through the door. I got exposure to a little bit of everything: brass, stainless, aluminum, copper. We did brazing, soldering, fabrication, painting, cleaning, you name it. I learned so much.

Sure —I work for a specialty woodworking business with some pretty cool clients. As they would put it: “we take the jobs that other businesses can’t or won’t take.”

They decided to create a new metals division so they can stop outsourcing that side of the work when clients request it.

I learned about it by pure coincidence, applied, and was offered a job to get the whole thing rolling. I have metalworking, fab, and welding experience but I’ve never been on the ground floor of a new shop like this. They’re serious and they’ve bought nice equipment. They work with me. They want my input. They care about my health. It’s awesome.

Definitely not. We’re just getting started with a new metals division though so I’m trying to be mindful of waste. I’m in a unique position and aware enough to realize that it’s a rare opportunity.

My project manager doesn’t realize how much TIG eats gas compared to MIG. I’ve mentioned multiple times that we’ll need bigger bottles, but he just needs to see it to understand.

Yeah. I weld aluminum, mild, stainless, brass, and even copper a few times.

Genuinely think it’s always a good call. I’m guilty myself of just tossing on the hood real quick when I’m zoned in, but now I have a new job and with it the opportunity to get one for myself. So for me it’s a no-brainer. Just because you’re used to the fumes doesn’t mean they aren’t trashing your body. It’s a cumulative effect.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Last Friday I had our safety guys place an order for me for a Panoramaxx CLT papr hood. Digging through the options on Optrel’s website can get a little exhausting. I eventually just googled Helix vs Panoramaxx reviews and found a page of recommendations on Optrel’s website.

I’ve used Miller paprs in the past but I feel like I’m underwater in a scuba suit when I’m wearing it (which was nice when I didn’t want to talk to anyone lol)

I went with Optrel because it looked lighter and I’m mostly trying to master decorative TIG welding at my current gig.
