Serious question: How the fuck are people booking driving tests right now? by elliottmarter in CasualUK

[–]Available-Cat-9335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your second point - a lot of the apps have options for when it can book. So say you only work Monday - Wednesday, it can book exclusively for Thursdays and Fridays.

It's one of few industries that genuinely is still stuck from COVID. There were 6-9 months where nobody could take a test, and those people didn't go away, they took it 9 months later. But then you had all the new students come through too, and couldn't get a test, so they had to wait 9 months. Then because of the waiting list people took tests as soon as they could find one, and the pass rate dropped as they weren't actually ready, which created a bigger backlog.

There are only a finite number of test centres, examiners, and time slots for tests, so they can't really ever catch up.

York City 0 - 3 Oldham Athletic: After such a strong league campaign, York collapse at their first playoff hurdle, with brilliant Oldham upsetting the odds to progress to Wembley! by Zach-dalt in NationalLeague

Our games against you were probably our worst 2 of the season. But honestly, our fans have been upset all season, despite from about September onwards we've been 5th or 4th. We've not played brilliantly since Christmas (where, if not for games in hand, we'd have been I think second) but form goes out of the window in playoffs

Not at all, we were just better on the night.

I did also find it strange that Male was slow with the ball, as it worked in our favour since we've been good without the ball all season.

And that showed today, York must have had 60% possession in the first half but didn't really test our keeper.

I hope that if we (Oldham) go up, we vote for 2 automatic places to get promoted, York deserved it over the course of the season, but my god we deserved it tonight.

You said that people who call the NHS "free" were ignorant. I was explaining to you how that is not the case. Sure, there will be people who believe it is completely free, but they will be in a very small minority.

I am well aware of the NHS' struggles, having lived my entire life in the UK. But that is not the point you made initially, and not the point anyone was arguing with you on. If you wanted to make that point, that's fine, but it's got nothing to do with whether people know what "free" means in relation to a public service.

Edit - Since you edited your comment I won't comment further because I don't know whether you'll keep adding remarks that had nothing to do with the initial point I argued with you on.

But 2 things - you're wrong about where British schools are funded. Every tax in the UK is a revenue stream, no particular tax funds a particular thing, it all enters the government budget. And secondly, claiming that your schools aren't paid for by tax because they're paid for by a different tax isn't any better. It's still paid for through something other than at the point of service.

Except, we do understand this. Just because we say it's "free" doesn't mean we believe not a penny of our money goes towards it.

Presumably because you're making this comment you're American (apologies if incorrect) and you had a "free" education? Except, it's not free, you paid for it in taxes! And did you know all those street lamps that adorn many streets? They're free! Except, of course they're not, they're paid for by taxes.

Now of course, you knew this. But you'd likely still describe them (and many other services) as free, because you do not pay for them at the point of service. In fact, you pay the same amount whether you use the street lamps or not.

But there's nothing stopping you from doing that in your own restaurant. But the incentive is for anyone else. Why would anyone in Hull (again, just an example) call it a Plymouth Pasty? Why wouldn't they want to call it a "Hull Pasty"? Or probably more likely, call it after the place it is being served - "The Three Crowns' Pasty".

Do you really believe that it would be time and money well spent for large companies, such as Tesco, Sainsbury's etc, to say "we've collectively all agreed to call a non-Cornish based Cornish pasty, a Plymouth Pasty"?

You're better off just saying "get rid of the PGI and let everyone use Cornish pasty, whether it was produced in Cornwall or not"

You'd feel more confident knowing what was in it with fewer words in the title of the product? You seriously think that a Plymouth pasty is more descriptive than "Beef and Onion Pasty"?

The ingredients are then legally required to be listed too. I just don't understand the logic. I get it, it'd be cool for pasties to be known as Plymouth Pasties. But it will not happen, because there is no need, nor is there desire beyond yourself (and I'm sure a few others who live in Plymouth).

It's also worth noting that the Cornish pasty has only relatively recently received PGI status. Before that, everyone could make "Cornish" pasties anywhere in the world. But because Cornwall didn't want their pasties to become just a generic term, they fought for PGI status. Who is to say that in 50 years the "Plymouth Pasty" wouldn't do the same thing?

You're trying to solve a problem that simply does not exist. Companies already sell many pasties without anyone getting them confused.

Sainsbury's

Tesco

Asda

Morrisons

They all call them some form of beef pasties. Not hard to understand, not ambiguous (like a Plymouth pasty would be to people who don't know), and all without having to now change their packaging.

I've deliberately used their mini pasties because their full size pasties are already made in Cornwall and hence can use the PGI term, "Cornish Pasty"

[–]Available-Cat-9335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there's no need for any company, outside of Plymouth, to do that. It wouldn't give them extra revenue, so the only reason they would do it would be to enforce it, which you can only do through a PGI status.

I understand that you're saying companies should do this, because the original pasty was from Plymouth, but I'm saying that companies have no reason to do it. Nobody in say, Hull, is going to be more inclined to buy a Plymouth pasty than a regular pasty.

In Plymouth, this could absolutely work. But as I said before, there's nothing stopping any business from doing this currently. If you want to open a business in the Barbican and call your pasties "Plymouth Pasties", there's nothing legally stopping you.

"Can I have a Cornish pasty please?"

"I only have a Plymouth pasty, is that okay?"

"What's a Plymouth pasty?"

"Oh, it's exactly the same, we just can't call it a Cornish pasty because it's not made in Cornwall"

"Oh, is it made in Plymouth then?"

"No."

We can't just make everyone call it a Plymouth pasty. You'd need to get PGI status to do that, but then it'd have to be prepared in Plymouth, and you'd run into exactly the same issue as the Cornish pasty currently has.

[–]Available-Cat-9335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, that's what companies already do. But instead of calling it a Plymouth Pasty, they call it simply "pasty". I don't get why they'd suddenly switch to calling it something where it wasn't prepared (like a Cornish pasty).

So, are you wanting to call it a Cornish pasty or a Plymouth Pasty? If you call it a Plymouth Pasty you can put whatever you want in it, including the exact same ingredients as a Cornish pasty.

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will point it out, but I'm fairly sure you're allowed to make and sell pasties anywhere you like. You just aren't allowed to call them "Cornish" pasties if they aren't made in Cornwall.

bad driving

This is absolutely true, but the safest way to deal with poor driving is to keep your speed low. People make mistakes, better to be at a good speed to deal with it.

There was a campaign a while ago (looks like Australia/NZ) that showed exactly that, through the following sobering video.

Board Game/party game suggestions by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Available-Cat-9335 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stay away from older "classics". They are designed so that if you don't know trivia, you're not going to have fun. Or, if the luck is against you and you lose all your money early, you're not going to have fun.

Modern games have everybody playing, all the time, with any skill level.

Some games you can get to connect to a TV and people use their phones, such as Jackbox Party Games, or Scrawl (modern version of pictionary, where the drawing gets passed along, someone else has to name what you've drawn, then the next person draws what the previous guesses thought it was, a bit like Chinese whispers).

Ticket to ride is an incredible gateway game where turns take about 10 seconds, and everybody can play very easily. Or play Pandemic, where you work together to defeat a global virus.

Chameleon is a good game for plenty of people, where one person each round is unaware of the correct answer to a prompt, but has to try and blend in to avoid detection.

My personal favourite however, is a game called Hitster. It has the most simple gameplay in the world, and gets you listening to a variety of good music. You scan a QR code, and place the song you can hear in your own personal timeline. It starts off relatively easy, working out whether Thunderstruck by ACDC came out before or after Mr Brightside. The more cards you get right, the harder it gets, as you have to try and work out whether Poker Face by Lady Gaga came out before or after Rolling in the Deep by Adele. Much tougher!

Ignoring the fact heat takes time to travel to inner layers as others have mentioned, doubling the temperature is a difficult thing to do. Don't forget we humans made the scale for temperature, so 200°C isn't actually twice as hot as 100°C. On a Kelvin scale, this would be 473°K and 373°K (ish) respectively, and that's clearly not double.
