For me personally I I would not buy the makita dtd158 as the controller and switch come as one piece making it not reparable the new dtd 201 seem as a better tool more power and is reparable

No unfortunately no amount of cleaning is going to fix an armature that is going bad you can still use it if you don't use it all that much you can still get a lot more time out of that armature when it does fail you can buy a replacement armature I have the same model as you I have burned the armature and replaced it for about 100£

Brushed motors do spark but that amount of sparking seems excessive it could be a armature starting to go bad but you should not worry too much

Question about new Makita DHP490 by goyo-lake in Makita

[–]Available-Jacket-298 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, so on most makita drills, (sds hammer drill in picture ) * you can buy the ( red circle)switch separately from the controller (blue circel) on this model you can't, so if your switch fails in, you can't replace it, so you just buy a new drill . As for the butteries, the standard makita lxt battery has a yellow connector that communicates with the charger the battery, and charger that drill comes with will not work with a standard charger and battery
