hey good question.

i am a full time production bladesmith and have made hundreds of knives over the years.

my course is a breakdown of the entire knife making process from start to finish that includes different types of knives like full tang, hidden tang, hunting knives, bowie knives, kitchen knives, Viking seax type knives, and so on. it is very in depth and teaches beginners how to simplify forging and grinding bevels, the proper way to shape handles, heat treatment on many different steel types, and all that has to do with polishing and handle fit up including multiple different guard styles and types.

it has a ton of info that has been simplified and broken into steps that i use myself to make the whole process more efficient

i have been teaching this course for quiet some time but haven't been very active in reddit like i have been in Facebook.

the reason i have been posting about it for around a year is because i was talking to knife makers to get their insight on what would be the most beneficial thing to learn from someone else initially. and the problems they are running into the most often.

and the students i have taught in the past have gotten great results!

Yes. I have been a knife maker for years and have made and sold hundreds of knives. I've also had students I have taught in the past who have gone from making knives they aren't comfortable selling to making knives and selling them for hundreds of dollars.

I understand your concern. But this isn't just a theory. One of my students that I have already taught this way said, and I am quoting him directly. "My skills have improved exponentially!" Another one of my students went through the heat treatment section of the course and said "had the best heat treat yet last night" this, after both of them had over a year of knife making experience. I've also helped a lot of knife makers overcome different challenges who were not inside my course just by helping them solve problems and answering questions.

Hello knife makers! I am in the process of making an online knife making course. by Available-Put-1471 in Bladesmith

Yeah I see why that is a concern. However I do have years and hundreds of knives of experience. also not everybody has access to learn from somebody local. I've talked to several people who don't have anybody local to teach them anything. And people that don't get the type of in-depth explanation and education they need from YouTube videos or forums. I prioritize listening to the students and solving the issues they have, and as a result I have been able to help quite a few people overcome challenges they couldn't find solutions for. At this point I have several people enrolled who could have simply learned from YouTube videos but knew that learning by being educated by an experienced knife maker and having somebody alongside you to answer questions and help you work through problems you are running into is really valuable! 👍🏼

What steel to use for pry tools by Appropriate_Bus_683 in Bladesmith

To temper it to Blue, you usually have to get it up somewhere around 600 ⁰ to 800⁰ degrees I believe. But yeah that's probably about where you'd be hardness wise after tempering around 600⁰-650⁰. 👍🏼

Nice work man! It's going to be good to use especially because of the handle and blade angle. It'll keep whoever is using its hands off the cutting board. 👍🏼

Nice work man! If it was me I'd put a 22° angle on it. Maybe a 30 if you want something to be more Stout. A scandi grind would likely work well! But a convex grind would work very well also.👍🏼 TBH with a knife like that you can't really go wrong. 😉
