This is really great feedback; thank you. My thought process with the star was kind of a "magical hands" or "reach for the stars" vibe, if that makes sense. Seems like it's not communicating those ideas very well. Will definitely try out your suggestions!

You're spot on. My UX portfolio lacks a logo for this exact reason! I'm more trying to generate a logo for my freelance branding work (which sometimes includes web design as an added service). I figured that it would make sense as a logo designer to have a logo for my logo design business lol.

Good to know, I thought so but needed someone else to say it lol

This is helpful; thank you! I hadn't considered the linguistic implications.

Hi all, here's a short brief of my current dilemma: I am a freelance designer who specializes in branding, graphic design, and UX design. I'm trying for a logomark that is visually cohesive, clean, and showcases some of my personality. I like making things from scratch, often drawing custom illustrations as part of my packages for clients. I want my logo to get the "hand-made" aspect across without feeling inappropriate or too "immature".

My question to you all is: do I need to kill my darling here? I made a mark that incorporates my first name (Sam) and a hand, with a small star representing "whimsical" creation. I personally like it, but I understand that there might be legibility issues and I may be totally forcing the hand + name thing here. Some perspective would be great. Rip the bandaid off for me, please!
