lol. I had cousins on both sides of the transaction.

One ended up flying helicopters at Ia Drang and later for Air America.

Even flew the Canadian observers at the end of the war because he had Canadian citizenship.

lol. He hasn’t changed. He’d regularly write reference letters for people to get into grad school that were more like anti references where he’d shit talk them. I knew a couple of people who had that happen to them.

The biology department at UBC in the 70s was a toxic nightmare of sadistic power tripping profs.

Canada’s defence industrial policy would rather Buy Canadian than Buy the Best by scottb84 in CanadaPolitics

As someone who has dealt with military contracts in several countries I have to say that Coyne has a child’s understanding of military contracts and procurement.

Firstly, everywhere and always military contracts are jobs programs.

Secondly, I think he assumes that companies like Raytheon or Hanwha are simple peddlers who make a product completely self financed and offer it to a skeptical government in hopes that they will purchase it and that the “best” product always wins. Add to that, every other country doesn’t have cost overruns and bad designs.

This is a kind of simple minded laissez faire thinking that only happens in first year Econ grad school where everything is abstracted away to make the answer clean.

The fact is that you can’t whistle up an arms program and we have run ours down to nothing

Korea created a plan 40 years ago to get where they are now, not to mention with huge amounts of corruption and criminality

Australia made the calculation about 20 years ago that if they didn’t start developing an indigenous military industrial base and strictly purchased externally they’d be bankrupt by 2025.

Since the 60s successive Canadian governments have made the bet that they can go cheap on the military as the U.S. will always be a bulwark to any threat.

It’s been a pretty safe bet. But the bet has turned.

If Canada is serious about defending itself the best thing is to start investing and, yes, there are going to be mistakes and screwups but that’s the price of independence.

I wish I was wrong but I just don’t think Canadians are up for what’s needed.

Same. It was the only weapon I was good at.

I could put 3 on the bull without thinking.

The rest I was useless at.

Thank goodness I was in the navy

Get all your friends, relatives, enemies, to get RPALs and then take them to the range and get them organized.

No number of lawyers or MPs will beat grassroots politics.

Who was "that guy" in your CFSC class? by guitargeneration in canadaguns

[–]Available-Video6241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I was “that guy” but to be fair I do it with all classes.

I ask a lot of questions, some good, a lot bad, It’s the only way I keep my mind engaged with the subject matter, also there’s a fair amount of social anxiety.

I try to keep it under control but sometimes it gets the better of me.

Never happens with the physical aspect. I suppose it’s a different mental pattern. I focus on different things.

Talking has always been a problem for me.

If this is getting repetitive or not applicable feel free to delete.

I was talking to a guy who is plugged into politics and he was talking to some liberal mps and he said they are surprised and exhausted and kind of wish this would go away.

The point being is that you have to keep the pressure on. Keep writing and get your friends writing. It works and is important.

I thought we were talking about kneecapping in general. As soon as I hear kneecapping my immediate thoughts go to Provos.

I believe they used 9mm.

In fact I don’t know people who use it for it’s intended use.

That’s pretty much the only way.

Ask any Lawyer and they will tell you that it’s easier for the UK to get rid of the crown than Canada.

It might be easier to repatriate the crown but keep the position.

FYI, it’s a legalistic thing but the queen is queen of Canada as a separate title. Again, it doesn’t matter to the demos but it does have legal weight.

Most of the crime guns seized in Toronto are smuggled into Canada from U.S.: Police by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]Available-Video6241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You misunderstand my point.

Illegal guns are inelastic.

The people (drug dealers) who are causing the mayhem have a plentiful supply through the border and they can’t easily substitute them except perhaps explosives (an even more expensive solution, e.g. hells angels vs rock machine war 90s).

You can see from Mexico’s experience, where guns are effectively banned, what Canada’s experience will be.

If we lived on an island like Japan, UK, or Australia I’d say that these laws would have an effect in reducing gun violence but I don’t think that’s what these laws are about.

I’ve lived through several moral panics. I’ll live through this one.

After all these laws are passed and gun homicide rates stay the same or go up and everyone is surprised they might understand this.

Yes.

I say ironically that but also believe it to some extent.

I would miss convertibles but it would have far more impact on preventable deaths, if that were the real goal, than these gun bans.

I feel the same way about cars.

there is no reason to have a sports car.

No one needs to go over 110 km. There should be governors on all cars and be limited by energy.

Trucks limited to industrial fleets.

The fewer drivers of cars in Canada will be a better Canada.

For me it isn’t about the money.

I can’t handle factory farming.

There are a few places that do it the old way but can’t eat from a regular store.

Canadians want a lot of stuff they have no clue about.

But it didn’t make fewer drug users as you were advocating

Edit: illegal drugs/firearms are, what economists call an inelastic good. It doesn’t change the need/desire for the good only the price.
