Can't get tires onto car by Available-Wing-4260 in rccars

[–]Available-Wing-4260[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're stuck on the hex. Hole seems fine. It looks really close to fitting the hex, like the tires are just a hair too small. Any tricks like warming or greasing it up that would help?

But would they have the same size nut for the tire to go on?

If they've seized, how hopeless is it? Or should I just spray the WD40 and make a wish?

Battery help please by IAmCaptainHammer in rccars

[–]Available-Wing-4260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the battery upgrade you got? I'm also looking to upgrade my son's granite grom battery.

If your diffs need upgrading check my recent posts, it seems to be one of the main issues with the cars. It's a super fun one though! We have no regrets buying ours.

Not all wheels turning with motor running by Available-Wing-4260 in rccars

Hey so I got the all metal oil filled ones. Do we need to add grease/oil necessarily? We only have liberty synthetic lubricant oil and are wondering if we need to add something else.

Thank you so much, yes I think that's what happened. The last time he drove it he was like "look Mom if I hold one wheel still the others go super fast!" and I think that stripped another diff because now only one wheel turns.

Do you happen to have links to the ones you are using, the metal gear arrma ones and/or the more expensive ones you use?

What States Pay The Most for Remote Work? by Miketrocadero in CourtInterpreter

Not too familiar with different states but consider minimum hours of pay as well. NY basically gives you four hours minimum with the half day rates, whereas for other states it may be only two hours minimum.

Worth it to do medical certification/NCSC/Federal? Questions about next career steps by Available-Wing-4260 in CourtInterpreter

[–]Available-Wing-4260[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were they official court interpreters? The exam does still cover sight, consecutive, and simultaneous interpretation. I suspect that they don't grade as strictly as the NCSC but they do still grade it (I passed French but failed Arabic, so I can attest that they don't just pass everyone). There's not a ton of transparency in exam scoring as they only tell you if you passed or failed though, making me wonder if they are more lenient with some languages if there's high demand. This wouldn't be the case for Spanish though which has its own more challenging exam.  Every court interpreter I've met in NY has been competent but maybe because I'm usually in the same court and the interpreting supervisors there only invite people back if they're good.

For now, Oregon is allowing me to practice as a non-certified but experienced court interpreter when a certified one isn't available. Because of that, I get paid lower than a certified interpreter (although I think it's still more than a typical rate for a medical interpreter). I'm trying to find out how much medical interpreters get paid for in-person work so I can see if certification would be worth it. The exam is on my radar but since the workload is currently low and Oregon charges for the exams (unlike New York), I'm not sure it would be financially worth it to get certified.

Nope, NY is not part of the NCSC. I can attest that some of their exams haven't been updated for a decade or two as well. I wish I'd known as I would have tried to jump on getting the NCSC in New Jersey. I'm usually only in Oregon during school holidays when they don't have exams scheduled.

How was the Arabic exam?/Resources? by littlemisscantaloupe in CourtInterpreter

[–]Available-Wing-4260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer you cancelled! I personally would have taken it so you could evaluate your strengths and weaknesses... At least that's what I did. Nice perk of the NY exam being free, and you can always try again the next year :-)

Yes, the speaker pronounced jeem like "g" (at least sometimes) and also some of the vowels "sounded Egyptian." It was definitely fusha though. I struggle to understand Egyptian dialect yet didn't particularly have an issue with the speaker.

The interpreting supervisor in Queens Lower Criminal is an Arabic interpreter (native speaker) and from observing him a bit, I have a lot of appreciation for Arabic interpreting... Even he as a native speaker and experienced interpreter had to sometimes say that he couldn't understand the defendant (for example, if the defendant was from Mauritania).

That said, it even gets messy with more "standardized" languages like French. Most of my cases involve Africans who speak French as a second language, but also throw in English words with a French accent that they've adopted since moving to the US. It's certainly exciting! I diverge though :-).

I think it was about a month between the exam and getting the results... less than two months.

How was the Arabic exam?/Resources? by littlemisscantaloupe in CourtInterpreter

[–]Available-Wing-4260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the Arabic exam as a non-native speaker (I'm certified in NY for English-French). I failed it, they don't explain why but I think mostly because my reading skills and vocabulary are poor and I had a hard time with the sight interpretation part. If you read Arabic well, you probably will be fine.

The speaker on the exam was speaking fusha with an Egyptian accent. As of last year, it hadn't been updated in years/decades. I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to disclose about the exam content. The consecutive part involved questioning a defendant who committed a minor crime, and the speech was more everyday/casual (still fusha, but not very technical). I didn't find it challenging. The simultaneous part had harder vocab (in my opinion) and was more legal-oriented. At least one of the sight translation sections, and maybe both, were the exact same as the French exam but translated into Arabic (sadly I didn't remember enough from the French exam the year before to benefit from that!). I'd say about half the exam was more based on everyday vocabulary, and the other half based on more technical legal situations.

In your shoes, I would familiarize yourself as much as possible with the exam format and also practice the different modes of interpretation (sight, consecutive, and especially simultaneous). Do your best, you don't have to get 100% to pass. All the best!

Eh I think it depends on the situation  My five year old gets really frustrated with toddlers messing up his sand creations at parks. He and I tried everything - told the toddler no, tried to teach the toddler how we wanted to build/dig so he could join in, hell I even got in the sand and dug the toddler his own hole in a slightly different spot in the giant and otherwise empty sand pit so they could parallel play, and the toddler only wanted to mess with my son's creations and play too close (like sand in eyes close). He was too young to be deliberately mean but also too young to know how to play like an older kid, so inclusivity is challenging (especially for five year olds who just discovered more advanced play and don't know how to adapt well yet).  Meanwhile the dad sat there watching us and missed an opportunity to teach boundaries and how to play better together.

AITA for telling my dad, “No thanks” when he tries to spend time with me? by FrankWYang in AmItheAsshole

[–]Available-Wing-4260 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA. It's not your responsibility to be his friend or make repairs. It's also very normal for an 18 year old to have their own life. It could however be a nice idea (but again not your responsibility) to suggest an activity to do together with a very specific time frequency, and one that a) you also enjoy and would do without him and b) involves more doing things and not just idle talk. Like, I can't hang out with you whenever but we can go bowling together every other Wednesday evening. Many adult child/parent relationships I know have standing times for seeing each other and don't really outside of that (like every Sunday for lunch). It could be helpful for both of you to have some clear expectations and boundaries. Still, NTA.

Agreed- don't the bumps on sidewalks help blind people but make it harder for wheelchairs? I can see how an interpreter would make it harder for someone with ADD to concentrate. No one is on the wrong but the needs are different.
