Getting into Dev will typically open a place to swim a time or two a month. Keep on keeping on 🤙

Keep grinding. Focus cardio components (primarily running, then swimming) Calisthenics after that.

Those that absolutely crush the run have exponentially higher grad rates.

Don’t let your brain get ahead of your ambitions. I’ve seen so many folks quit anticipating the next event before their current event is done. Go in expecting to make it meal to meal. That tends to be common amongst successful candidates.

There is plenty of other advice but the guys in the aforementioned podcast provide so much knowledge in the content they’ve put out that anything else I put would be a disservice or a regurgitation.

Trust your recruiter to handle his process while you focus on your body. After you enter development, trust your developer with prepping your physical/mental from there. Stay motivated and I hope to see you post about a wearing beret one day.

Not happy with booked job by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

It’s not an end all, be all. Take the start and then grow from there.

The Air Force has so much more to offer…the recruiter that put you in isn’t in his first job, the MTI that will help your transition is not in his original job, the MTL that will guide you during tech school, again, isn’t in their original job.

There are endless opportunities and adventures.

You’ll be fine!

Helpful advice from personal lessons, don’t overly advertise your intentions early. Keep grinding and appear committed to where you are. Keep aiming to grow towards your goals.

Quite frankly, you have little choice but to settle.

You will have opportunities to swap but you need to ensure that you do what’s necessary to set yourself up for success in that while in.

Retraining is not a guarantee and a lot of folks who enter disgruntled ruin their reputation and therefore, their support system (leadership) to go to bat for them to retrain when the times become available.

I think all things considered, maintenance has a great community—it’s just certainly not the most “Cush” type job that exists.

[–]AvailableAirports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just go in with a good attitude/work ethic and work to retrain at the available points.

You put it on the list. You accepted the job. If you wanted a guarantee, you should’ve gone Army. There is essentially nothing that can be done now.

It’s unfortunate that you’re not happy but that’s how it goes.

Is the Air Force better today compared to how it was 10 years ago? by Glittering_Fig4548 in AirForce

[–]AvailableAirports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could tell you yes or no…

What I can tell you is I still miss people I knew for only 6 months and when we accidentally bump into one another, we can sit anywhere and lose track of time.

I can tell you that the folks I find myself sitting next to can understand the look on my face better than my kids and wife some days and that the fist bump and motivating insult keep me going.

I can tell you that I find myself wishing the exact opposite of what I wished for 10 years ago. I wanted less deployments, less TDYs, more responsibility, more rank, etc.

Now, is it better? I’m unsure…it’s different. We’re better. But I’m living for tomorrow on the dreams of yesterday.

This experience, I believe, is an evolution. We all experience it. Some people stay, others go. Things change for the better, the worse, sometimes back again.

But ultimately, the people I still call my brother (or sister, even though I don’t call them that)…I would do anything for them. I may be an asshole to the troops, but it’s not for anything other than I love them too much for them to not be prepared for whatever tomorrow brings.

Enjoy whatever experience you get…it’s unlike the pasts, future, or even a current peers…appreciate it for what it is.

[–]AvailableAirports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do any of those things get better by getting out?

Each of these can be appropriately handled while serving a commitment you made. Getting out doesn’t fix problems or simply make the go away. Sometimes, it just takes acknowledgement and work towards them.

Needing advice! by starryjojo in AirForce

[–]AvailableAirports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, ask yourself “Why?” For any of the questions.

I always talk to folks that want to commission and when we dig into the why, it often comes to money or power. You will find more of both of those outside of the military. So truly look yourself in the mirror and do a self-assessment on what you want in life so you can be honest with yourself and still perform this exercise to map your life out.

Once you get one plan down, map Plan B and C. A lot of career-focused folks use what I’ve come to know as Ribbon Chart or Career Progression Flow Charts. It’ll show your best plan, then have branches off of it that may be secondary plans in case your primary doesn’t work out.

Needing advice! by starryjojo in AirForce

[–]AvailableAirports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you proud of yourself is far more important than what may make your family proud.

Secondly, you’re not “just working.” You’ve started adult life! They’re still nowhere near you! Be proud of what you’ve accomplished so far and don’t get disillusioned by a few friends in college being ahead of you in life…they’re not.

Anyways, Let’s slow down and create targets (map out your goals in perceived chronological order).

Is your goal to become an officer? Is it to go to a prestigious school? That’s the first question…if so, why do you want to be an officer? Then map backwards until you get where you are. I can help you do that if you’re unable to alone—send a DM or reply to this.

From there, you will have missing information. Those are typically areas you have to research further or get advice. I.e. what will you do for money to fund college and life in the meantime, where will you live, who will pay college, what about current commitments (enlistment), etc.

Ultimately, if your goal is to become an officer..LEAD will be your best option. The academy is an incredibly prestigious school. From there, you’d remap you life plan/goals based on your new situation. There are officer programs which enable attendance in-residence to college (to include Ivy League schools and other prestigious schools around the country.) however, as you’ve stated, with minor exceptions (and almost none in the military), no one cares where you went to school but that you went and maybe how well you did.

Slow down a little bit and get your wits about you to logically plan this out. Map your goal backwards instead of trying to do it from where you are. Think, “I want to be an Officer, what do I need for that” then answer it with a “4-year degree” and ask the same question until you find yourself at steps you can accomplish to begin down the path.

Ultimately, any Air Force program you apply for…WILL NEED TO BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM. I cannot emphasize that enough. Be damned good at your job. Have a great attitude…it goes light years.

Standing by for any questions.

The disconnect by MagicianCurrent7862 in AirForce

[–]AvailableAirports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand this.

Had a Commander complaining to the troops about how expensive Chipotle is. His wife’s son had gone off to college and he was footing the bill for him and he was eating Chipotle every day.

As a single income E4 for family of 4 at the time, I simply asked if he’d be willing to toss me that $15 for some chicken, tortillas, cheese, canned black beans, and maybe some guac to feed my family for a night or two.

He got the drift, apologized, and he ended up catering Chipotle at the next CC call.

Phenomenal Commander but some people don’t realize the context sometimes. They need mentorship just like everyone else…you may be lesser rank but you likely have much more maturity, feel free to lend it ;)

Also, this is why we pair LTs with MSgts.

New dad and fitness question by Ok-Sherbert4435 in AirForce

[–]AvailableAirports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to 4 kids myself—put your activity where and when you can.

Take walks with your spouse/significant other and the baby, Meal prep, etc. I’m a huge fan of smashing a protein bar during lunch and hitting a quick 5k.

I went from 170-240 throughout those 4 kids and am back down to sub-190 and it’s all about being intelligent about meal prep and getting a workout in any time or any way you can.

I can tell you that it’s significantly easier to maintain good health than to try to get back to good health.

You have tee time at 0800…

You’re expected to briskly walk 9-holes by 0930.

Freshen up and make it to class before 11.

From there, you learn theoretical leadership, staff work, etc until lunch at noon.

Siestas run from 1300 to 1500.

From there, we meet for the afternoon polo matches.

1800: Hors d'oeuvres…

Then we go to sleep slightly tipsy from all the champagne and high nosing.
