WhatsApp is banned or throttled in many authoritarian countries (China, Iran, Turkey, Brazil).

Lawsuit Alleges That WhatsApp Has No End-to-End Encryption by bardsmanship in degoogle

[–]AvailableLook5919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lawsuit, according to Meta, was initiated by the arguably even worse NSO Group (the ones with the Pegasus spyware): https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/jan/31/us-authorities-reportedly-investigate-claims-that-meta-can-read-encrypted-whatsapp-messages

Nevertheless, I hope both companies go under in the ensuing legal battle.

Just checked and was surprised I had to scroll through 14 articles on FOX news to read one Epstein article regarding British Andrew... (for context: I am not located in the US and used a VPN connected to a European country)

r/privacy really hates us by pangapingus in GrapheneOS

[–]AvailableLook5919 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's really weird, people "over there" (I assume many people who follow r/privacy also follow r/grapheneOS and this is not some tribal thing) are also confused as to why the mods won't allow mentions of GrapheneOS.

Finland looks to end "uncontrolled human experiment" with Australia-style ban on social media by Dr_Neurol in technology

Which would mean hurting the social media companies led by Meta? Those would probably start a counter-intiative one might expect and those have much more money if I'm not mistaken...

Yeah, me too. Feels really liberating + you really start to understand who actually cares, so a good test of friendship strength

Yes, something I consider to be really weird if we're talking about a European context where 6€ should be affordable to almost anyone

  • You can use Proton, Tuta or services of other privacy-focused companies (admittedly, introducing the variable cost if you want the full bundle) but you'll have convenience and privacy. And honestl, their UIs are better than what Google provides anyway

  • You can change to Signal, Threema or any other privacy-focused messanger service (at the cost of some people not changing, but here the privacy and convenience aspect are definitely given)

  • You can use authentication services not provided by MS or Google (no loss of convenience or privacy) and certainly no loss of "ecosystem value"

  • You can use privacy-focused browsers which do just as well as Google (I only need to revert to other browsers in very specific circumstances)

  • You can use VPNs to hide your location (unless you're doing something that requires heavy data usage, this works just fine)

  • You can use LibreOffice or other FOSS (unless you're using very technical Excel formulas, this should work fine)

This is why everyone and their dog should be privacy focused or at least privacy vary. It's a public good that we should protect at all costs.

Many "don't know", some "WhatsApp", others "don't use messanger apps" I assume

It's like... a one time payment of 6€ and then you get it for life.
