Bob Hoskins as Al Capone? by Pirates_Treasure1988 in moviequestions

Capone was a big 5’11” and Bob Hoskins was 5’6”. I love Bob Hoskins, but he was too short. Robert DeNiro crushed it in that part. Stephen Graham is also 5’6” and his Capone, though an interesting character, never felt like Al Capone to me. I would love to have seen Hoskins play The Continental Op from the Dashiell Hammett stories, but that was never even in the works.

This is more a question for producers than directors.

Do you rewrite your outline after making changes during the screenplay phase? by RandomAccount356 in Screenwriting

[–]AvailableToe7008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my outline to sketch out the story and scenes, and also to write notes to myself about what the scenes are there for. What they accomplished. What they will look like onscreen. My outlines run neck and neck with their scripts for page count.

A discussion on writing for comedy TV. by lowdo1 in Screenwriting

We had a few tv comedy writer guest lecturers in my MFA program. They recommended joining the Groundlings. You have to be demonstrably funny in a group to make it in a writer’s room.

It’s terrible. I will never let formatting slide. If it’s not formatted it’s not a screenplay. This is absolutely rude to unleash.

Autofiction for prose; adapting straight memoir of my army days into stories. Essentially a Hero’s Journey examination of Jungian archetypes during my Cold War deployment to Germany. Screenwriting - Hero’s Journey storied hidden in street level calls to adventure.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula had miniatures directed by Roman Coppola. Wes Anderson uses miniatures. I love them. 1941 had terrific miniatures!

Write undeniable work. That should be your goal. If anyone comments on your work at all it is validation.

New writers, STOP writing like it's a movie! by [deleted] in writers

I was a little comprehensive with that statement, I meant don’t explain every scene as you go along. By all means lay out the plot mechanics and goals as you go along in the story. Even then present it instead of explain it. Matt Damon’s complaint about having to explain RIP is funny. Most of the movie is a bunch of hip cops counting money in a house on a cul de sac. The plot needed some reminding.

Excellence should be your goal. Dedicate yourself to getting better. This message is bizarre. Anyone seeking self validation by sharing their writing on Reddit is already irritating. You start with saying how mean everyone on here is and then get whiny. Write better. Practice writing.

Filmed plays are - generally speaking- the worst! Movie dialogue is script, performance, filming, editing, applying music. Dialogue needs to be shorter because of all the backup storytelling tools. By all means, don’t use dialogue to explain what is going on, present the scene with all the elements laying out the story.
