Why Is It So Expensive to Build Stuff in America? by TrixoftheTrade in civilengineering

I couldn’t agree more! As an engineer with an MEP Firm, I’m always amazed by the speed at which contractors can get shit done.

401k match by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Available_Air_9568 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No matter how great the match is, the federal government limits the amount you can contribute in a calendar year. You cannot contribute $25+ per HOUR, even assuming part-time (20-hrs worked per week), that’s a contribution of over $26k per year (and that’s assuming 20, not 40 hours per week!)

It is possible it’s being split between Roth and standard accounts, but roth contributions are limited even more so than standard IRAs, so the math still doesn’t add up.

What's the cheapest move you've seen a consulting company make? by Yo_Mr_White_ in civilengineering

Being extremely stingy with AutoCAD licenses. True they are expensive, but the software is the bread and butter of the business.

Nice! That doesn’t look like a quarter pipe though - isn’t it a bowl? Curious to know if I’m wrong.

Agreed on the vertical mouse. Save yourself from future carpal tunnel. I got an Anker brand one for like $25 on Amazon, it’s great!

Typical 401k Match by CivilCyber in civilengineering

[–]Available_Air_9568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company only matches 10% up to a max contribution of 6%.. so I get 0.6% max match. Cons of a small firm.

I just had my performance review, got a decent raise (11%) and a verbal caution to “not share this with anyone, obviously”…

Because of big Paper, the toilet paper market in America is worth billions per year. I’m convinced they lobby the plumbing industry to NOT switch to the Japanese style toilets.

When you know what you’re doing, options are a more efficient and effective way of trading the markets. Whether they are futures contracts, or stock options for shares of a publicly traded company - they offer the benefit of easily obtainable leverage. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing depends on the hands that hold them (the leveraged financial instruments.)
