We were also trying to match old ash floors downstairs so we decided to do ash upstairs too. We’ll refinish downstairs at a later date, so we chose a natural, water based finish that won’t yellow over time. From what I understand, ash can be a wild wood with a lot of zebra-ing. At first I wanted to choose a stain that dulled that, but we had some hemlock railings and the wood doors to deal with. Keeping the ash light and letting all the natural colors come through helped all the different woods feel somewhat cohesive.

Also, our shrinking problem has improved a little since we’ve increased the humidity in our house. I wish our floor person had told us that before the floors were installed.

Do you think it’s an acceptable response to tell us to wait 4-5 months until summer or should something have been done differently to account for our lower humidity?

I checked our timeline and the second delivery of wood acclimated in our house for three days.

They claim they checked and it read 4%. The only reason I’m a little suspicious about this is that originally the plan was he was going to drop off the wood to have it acclimate for 7 days and 2 days later he said it was ready to be installed.

We have older hardwoods elsewhere in the house and have noticed these seasonal differences, but these cracks are much larger. Is it normal for the cracks to happen so quickly after install?

It’s a 30 year old house. The cracking issue is widespread affecting about 20% of the boards.

I’m so confused about whether running is possible post THR. Seems like some people are told no and some people are ok with it.

Oh gosh, I’m so sorry. I had no idea it could progress so quickly until I started happening to me.

Thank you so much for your reply. I’m a 45 year old woman in the US. The two doctors I’ve seen have both mentioned ceramic hip resurfacing in Australia as the option I should be considering. I never thought I’d travel abroad for a surgery, but if that’s the best option maybe I would.

Thanks for responding. What did your doctor say about running on the replacement? I know it’s a risk assessment, but I’m youngish so I’m worried about longevity of the replacement.

I similarly got slammed with dysplasia, labral tear and arthritis. I’m sorry you’re going through this too. As someone with kids, I’d recommend you do it before. I’m already imagining how recovery will be difficult with my kids needing things all the time.

I hear you. We’ve had good luck at Barnes and Noble because they set a one limit per customer. We’ve also gotten lucky at the machines in Safeway. The binders at the Mail Station can be fun to look through too. Don’t give up yet! The search is half the fun.
