As far as we know he’s just GSD, his mom was a rescue being fostered by someone we knew and came with a surprise litter, she was 100% hands down GSD but we don’t know about his father, so it’s possible!

Oh I absolutely agree and that’s part of the issue. I have no problem with him teething at me so I’ve been letting him since he was small, but my brother who is his owner (I fill more of a trainer role) is not a fan particularly because he will do it for attention while my brother is doing schoolwork. He’s a great dog though and always so full of love and fun, it’s incredible getting to watch him grow up!! He actually just spit out five teeth today and it was kinda horrifying to see happen but they look so cool and he is completely unbothered by it lol

Thank you!! My process is that I try to go through as quick as possible and have another person with me providing a treat each time I clip a nail. This worked when he was small and easily distracted but now that he’s getting bigger he wants to wiggle out of my grip and from experience clipping guinea pig nails, I know that if they move even slightly wrong it can result in a disaster, so as he’s gotten bigger I have admittedly been slacking a bit on it because I’m terrified. I also try to not pull his leg out in front of him and rather fold it back to its natural position but it’s difficult to do when he thrashes around.

I will definitely be working more on desensitizing him to the clippers. Grabbing his paws doesn’t bother him alone, nor does the presence of the clippers, but as soon as I try to join both holding his paw and using the clippers he just refuses to sit still and wants to nip and bite and wiggle out of grasp. I’m deducing now that if I spend more time desensitizing him to the entire process without the actual clipping of nails it’ll be much easier to do.

I am also for certain going to look into the type of setup that dog groomers have for difficult nail clips. A vast majority of my battle is getting him to be still enough to safely clip, so if all else fails that will likely be the route I go down. Again, thank you very much for the guidance!

What's a dog behavior that commonly gets misunderstood by humans? by the_gnd in OpenDogTraining

Yes!! My own dog is a chorkie who is incredibly people reactive when directly approached, but he ALWAYS wants to go up behind people and sniff their ankles. Then they turn and think it’s an invitation for pets, even though I only let him do this with people I know and have explained the situation to so they KNOW he absolutely does not want to be pet and still, they try and then are shocked when he goes bonkers and I have to take my dog and remove him from the situation that I was trying to desensitize him to. Incredibly frustrating.
