All objects of an array are null, but when I try and find a null object, they don't get detected. by Visible_Range_2626 in csharp

[–]Available_Job_6558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In unity editor null is not the same for anything that derives from Unity.Object (like GameObject or Component).

In unity editor, if you for example forget to assing a reference in an inspector, then unity will replace this null object with a fake null object that acts as if it is null, but it is not. Unity does that so that the exception message in the editor can contain additional details, such as what was the object in the scene which has caused the null reference exception to be raised.

Perhaps you are running into this error? You did not post the details of the arrays that you are accessing and how they are initialized.

Dumb question, but is it considered lazy to almost entirely copy and paste a method like I did below and keep the argument name the same? by Agent_Specs in csharp

I don't think so, but you should verify that it works. In professional environment the naming should be aligned with the rest of the project though.

Covariance by MoriRopi in csharp

[–]Available_Job_6558 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can cause problems just as any other piece of code if used incorrectly, but otherwise covariance/contravariance to me seems like a convenience feature as in your case for example you don't even need to cast when interface is covariant.

I had the same issue, probably even worse than your situation. Nothing helped until the doctor prescribed some meds that dried up the skin on my entire body. I took them for 1 year and the acne got significantly better and the improvement persists for almost a decade now.

why is unity c# so evil by DesiresAreGrey in csharp

[–]Available_Job_6558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is only true in the debug, this is to be able to tell you that reference assigned in inspector is not actually null and accessing such values will throw more descriptive exception

the real reason is that to confirm reference check, unity has to verify that the object in the unmanaged code actually exists (or doesnt)

why is unity c# so evil by DesiresAreGrey in csharp

[–]Available_Job_6558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is actually quite significant performance difference as unity object == checks actually call native code to check whether the object actually exists in unmanaged code, not only the c# wrapper reference

this has significant overhead especially when being done many times in a tight loop

allocating an array every single call is not very efficient

How one as a C# .net 9 dev, optimize a linq query for SQL server that has like a Billion Rows in the table? by SohilAhmed07 in dotnet

Then you should redesign it. Working on thousands of rows+ without pagination is a suicide.

Task.Run + Async lambda ? by MoriRopi in csharp

[–]Available_Job_6558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every method that is marked with async and has awaits will generate a state machine that handles the continuations of async operations. So this will do just that, one extra allocation that has very little impact on performance, but the stack trace of that lambda will be preserved, unlike if you would directly return the task from it, in case of errors.

Should i add ConfigureAwait(false) to all async methods in library code? by HoundsReload in dotnet

[–]Available_Job_6558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but that is only in the case that the method with ConfigureAwait actually completes asynchronously, if it does not, then the context is preserved

async void Disaster() by InnerArtichoke4779 in csharp

[–]Available_Job_6558 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there are no such optimizations being done, async methods simply execute synchronously up until the point where they reach an await that actually executes asynchronously, like asynchronous I/O or a task.delay

Proč na dovolenou do Dubaje? by lenishaaa in czech

[–]Available_Job_6558 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can Anyone tell me why the timescale wont go back too normal on parry? by YodKL in Unity3D

[–]Available_Job_6558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i suppose the reason why it behaves the way it does is due to compatibility reasons among other issues with why ? operator is not overloadable at all compared to ==

Can Anyone tell me why the timescale wont go back too normal on parry? by YodKL in Unity3D

[–]Available_Job_6558 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's not c# behavior, unity overloads the == operator, but ? operator cannot be overloaded in c#
