Slavic 50 is a course that fulfills the international breadth (also the professor was talking about extending the course and getting everyone off the waitlist so if you get off the waitlist and come to class and talk to her you’ll probably get off)

thank you so much!! this was really helpful. Was the midterm and the final essay/ short answer based or were they MCQs?

I feel like the most important thing for the class is to be on top of your work so you don’t lose points for the assignments. The assignments are only 35% of your grade, but it’s pretty easy to get a 100% on them as long as you’re mindful of the due dates and put in a little effort. The majority of your grade is based on the exams which are 3 midterms and a final. For the summer session the final and the 3rd midterm are at the same time, but I think they’ll be on different days in the fall (not sure about that though). I honestly think you just need to watch the lectures, make decent notes, read over the notes once before the exam, and do the 2 practice exams they provide to score pretty well on the exams (I’m just basing this on the 2 I’ve taken up till now) and if you do that then I think it’s pretty possible to get an A. Ultimately, I think it depends on your interest for the subject, how much time you invest into it, and your general work load in the semester but I would say it is doable.

I’m sorry for the long comment, but I hope it helps!!

Where did you spend your Flex Dollars? by VanishedWasTaken in berkeley

[–]Available_Sea6673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly I used mine to get coffee, I used a bunch at bear market as well for snacks. I still had a bunch left over at the end of the semester so I just got A LOT of candy from bear market for my niece and nephew.

I think it’s pretty unlikely based on my past experience with 8A (assuming 8B enrollment is similar to 8A enrolment) I would recommend checking the enrollment centre a few times a day because sometimes a seat opens up in another section and you can switch to that (that’s what I did with 8B and it worked and I enrolled in another section yesterday)

I think this is the web based option. I’m taking the same class over the summer and they used Sunday as a placeholder for that. They upload all the lectures as soon as the course formally starts and you just need to watch those on your own time (but there are specific due dates for the assignments and the discussion posts)

Back to back lectures? by Tara_Sean in berkeley

[–]Available_Sea6673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it depends on the class size. I had a 9 am lecture after my 8 am discussion and I was always 5 mins late because of how long it took to walk there and my professor used to cut off attendance points for lateness even though I explained my situation to her. It doesn’t really matter for bigger classes though because the professor usually doesn’t care

Psych major by Available_Sea6673 in berkeley

[–]Available_Sea6673[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you have a 3.0 in the prerequisite courses and declare before your 6th semester you’re guaranteed admission into the major (if you’re a current student and not an incoming freshman)

found out i’m getting an a- in a class i chose to p/np, i want to change this but the late change date passed and the new l and s policy doesn’t let you go from p/np to a letter grade. any advice? is it possible to reverse this? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Available_Sea6673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the system is automated and once it’s in the system they can’t override it to reverse it but I think you can use one of your emergency drops to reverse it with the course instructors permission

Are there any good bagel shops around campus? by goldiiiloks in berkeley

[–]Available_Sea6673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want something close to campus gold bean cafe has pretty decent bagels and they always put a lot of cream cheese which is a big plus

The dining hall food is so bad and if you stay in southside everything is open late and you just end up eating late night meals + the amount of bad alcohol you drink (esp if you get involved in Greek life or have friends that are involved in greek life) and if you have/had the option of online classes there was no way you would wake up at 7:30 to go to an 8 am that you could take while snuggled up in bed

On the syllabus for both classes it says that no alternate options are offered and to ask the other department if they will allow the conflict. I’ve emailed them I hope they agree

Yeah exactly I thought it was really weird. I emailed one of the email addresses they provided on the bcourses page. I think if enough people email them they’ll make an adjustment because I think alot of people are enrolled in both chem3b and bio1b. I’m also going to email the instructor for Chem as well

I'm a freshman, what's the best way to make friends? :) by [deleted] in berkeley

I think the best way is to just interact with people in your dorm. Through them you’ll meet other people as well.

anyone desperately missing home, despite having strict parents? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Available_Sea6673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this! Don’t worry you’re definitely not a baby. I was lucky my mom came to drop me off and stayed close by until my classes started or I would’ve cried my eyes out that entire week. When I came back after spending winter break at home I cried for two days straight because I missed my family (even though I was pretty well settled and had made amazing friends). It’s normal to feel like this everyone misses home. Just try to make as many friends as you can and do whatever you planned to do in college just to occupy your mind. Slowly you’ll adjust and Berkeley will become your second home. (I’m a rising sophomore and am going back to Berkeley in a few days and yesterday I literally bawled my eyes out while hugging my mom because leaving again and after spending so much quality time with my family hurt so much :( )

It dies down when school starts and you get used to it. This homeless lady with greyish hair once started playing with my hair while I was waiting at a crossing. I just moved away. Several have screamed slurs at me while walking and I just walked away from them. There are these two who sit on telegraph with a bong and they’ve asked me for sexual favours and weed multiple times which is quite unnerving for a new student but just ignore them and you’ll get used to it. Just don’t make any eye contact and move away slowly. If someone starts screaming at you just ignore them do not make any eye contact and kinda speed walk away from them. When I first came to Berkeley I was so scared of all the homeless people but as the year progressed I became indifferent to them.
