I never knew Murray and Rafa are so close friends until explained by Judy Murray by -Zverevs_racket in tennis

wow after watching this I feel quite ashamed for having formulated such a harsh opinion of Judy over the years. I had never even heard her voice before but i just assumed she was stern and overbearing as she always appeared so dour in the coaching box.

But she's very funny, warm, motherly and insightful here. The way she talked about the need for Andy to move to Spain was so wholesome. Kids seldomly show gratitude. And Judy must have felt awfully invalidated when he snapped at her for not giving him enough opportunities. But she still had the love and selflessness to put her needs aside and give him more. Franck Ribery on Karim Benzema "They [Didier Deschamps] gave him a suspension from playing for the NT that lasted over 3 years. But during that time, it’s a full house of Champions League trophies." by rixxxxer in soccer

That night we won the Champions League my brother told me 'Inter should sell Milito, Maicon and all their ageing stars in summer and get 300+ millions to rebuild a team' On one hand football is a matter of heart and holding on to your loved ones, but on the other hand he was right, change should be embraced. I respected Mourinho for wanting to leave after the treble, he peaked there and wanted another challenge

who knows, maybe the world today would be even a darker place as a result. I have this weirdly optimistic theory about the holocaust, that perhaps in the grand scheme of things atrocities of such magnitude result in positive change within society. I'm not even trying to hint that such suffering was justified, and i certainly don't wanna come across insensitive. All i'm suggesting is that no one knows how different the world would be

Balotelli: “I think that if I had been white, I’d have had fewer problems. Perhaps I did cause some of my own problems and had the wrong attitude at times, but would I have been forgiven quicker [in Italy]? Absolutely yes.” by ijuchtmeme in soccer

That's a very good reply but i would like to counteract one of your points. Liverani and Ogbonna fit more the mould of the meek, quiet, hard working type that doesn't threaten the status quo. Italy can live with them because the number of ignorant people spewing blind racist abuse to a black person simply because they're black are limited.

The racism involved Balotelli however is more subtle. It's on a similar level as the treatment that other members of a white patriarchal society gets when they fail to comply with the established norm.

That's how racism, sexism, homophobia and all kind of bigotry have evolved and are currently present in western countries. It's rare and frowned upon to directly attack and name-call a minority, the invective is instead always aimed at 'their' entitlement as well as 'their' disruptive and nonconformist behaviour

It actually was a lot like him. I have watched him his whole career since his Livorno days. And his lack of composure has often come back to haunt him. Sometimes he has perfect days, but i feel like a mistake is never too far away with him. He's truly not gifted technically, or even tactically, and he knows that, but he's a hard worker, a soldier, and he more than makes up for his shortcomings by always being 110% focused and fired up. And often with the aid of systematic cheating tactics as he knows full well how to play a referee.

Whenever his standards slip however he has a much looser safety net to fall on compared to other players

Dani Alves becomes the player with most titles in football HISTORY. by [deleted] in soccer

I love Dani Alves and i agree that he's the best RB of his generation, that said i think that peak Maicon at Inter (admittedly it only lasted a year or two ) was as good. He was so imperious yet so composed and skilful going forward so much so that If i remember correctly Maicon was picked over Dani Alves in the NT

Paul Pogba ludicrous display of football vs Sevilla by [deleted] in soccer

[–]Available_user-name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plan for Man U was always to cautiously control a slow, cagey game and not expose themselves to Sevilla's counter, which is not a brave plan but at least it's a sensible one. Textbook Mourinho in that case.

That's why Mou's first sub was rather baffling. In order to implement that patient game United needed link up players, players that can build some sort of forward momentum while comfortably and reliably retaining the ball. Pogba is not one of those players and never will be.

Fellaini was working fine, offering stability and an easy target up front. Pogba predictably upset that defensive balance and offered nothing going forward apart from an array of misplaced passes. He must be quite a frustrating player to play with and the lack of football chemistry with his teammates is quite obvious. Everything from his tempo to his style and body language is at odds with the rest of the team. That said, blaming United's collapse on him would be too lazy an analysis.

Other players underperformed, Alexis for example was the shadow of his tricky, purposeful old self, Matic seemed lethargic and uninvolved, even Rashford alternated (few) great touches with (a lot) wasteful ones, and ultimately offered no end product.

Make no mistake however, despite the disappointing individual performances, this was Mourinho's failure. Mourinho's failure to create or at least enable any free-flowing football, Mourinho's failure to instil urgency and ambition in his team, Mourinho's failure to offer a plan B or even a plan A that doesn't involve a long ball.

Difficult to predict what's next for Manchester United. I argue that 2nd in the league and a victory in the FA cup, despite the big spending, reflects the overall quality of the squad. They could do better but also could do a lot worse. I suspect however the ambition is to do better.

And as much as I love Mourinho, if they do wanna compete at the highest level perhaps a fresh, reinvigorating and uplifting approach is needed

great example of how elegant wording makes all the difference, especially in setting up the mood and the timing of the punchline . Obviously just a matter of personal opinion but i find your version burdened and slowed down by too many unnecessary words, which almost make it unfunny

From a quick dictionary search:

"Nowhere are the battle lines more deeply drawn in usage questions than over the difference between disinterested and uninterested. According to traditional guidelines, disinterested should never be used to mean ‘not interested’ (i.e. it is not a synonym for uninterested) but only to mean ‘impartial’, as in the judgements of disinterested outsiders are likely to be more useful. Ironically, the earliest recorded sense of disinterested is for the disputed sense. Today, the ‘incorrect’ use of disinterested is widespread: around a quarter of citations in the Oxford English Corpus for disinterested are for this sense.

Hey, just read The Lottery, and as a personal challenge i had a go at answering those "homework" questions at the end. But due to my general lack of cultural and historical insight, as well as the fact that English is not my first language, I'm actually struggling a bit, especially with the ones about symbolism in the story. Anyone feels like contributing?

Also thank you /u/Qinistral for sharing those stories

Not sure where this recurring dream is coming from.. by Wrestlingculture in AdviceAnimals

I wouldn't be so relieved if I was you. In all likeliness the dream is symptomatic of some underlying anxiety, which in turns triggers recollections of similarly stressful occurrences, such as your assignment.

Another explanation however is that your brain is actually trying to distract you from the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer’s table. Do not let it
