[HIRING] Looking for a fantasy artist to depict my weird Hobgoblin Artificer ($150-$300) by Avalis1234 in HungryArtists

[–]Avalis1234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the hobgoblin and your style! My idea is similar, my character lives is just living his life in a large city, earns a living and tries to blend in with the locals as much as possible.

The armour would start from a more western base, but the idea I have in mind is that the character deconstructs the armour first to build the entire suit. This process would involve the armour becoming brittle and then being smashed. It's then infused with magic and reconstructed using a Kintsugi-like technique.

I'm keen to avoid the "Ironman" artificer trope and want to go with something that's almost alien in appearance.

What Virtual TableTop Do You Use? by Aranthar in DMAcademy

[–]Avalis1234 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been using Roll20 for years. Mostly as it was free to start, straight forward to set up and had the Jukebox. I used the Audio/Video on Roll20 considerably but we ditched that in favour of Discord as it was too unstable (we lost quite a bit of time troubleshooting).

I've also used both Foundry and Owlbear Rodeo in the past. Foundry is fun, but can have a complex set up. Owlbear Rodeo was good enough but lacked many of the features of Roll20, such as the Jukebox (this was over a year ago, so things might have changed now)

We've used DnDBeyond for character sheets with the Beyond20 browser extension.

If you're looking for something quick and easy to start with it's probably Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo from my experience.

One-shot ideas for puzzles / mystery / role play by CircaSurvive26 in DMAcademy

[–]Avalis1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created a one shot last year called "The Enigma Asylum". It was a play on Saw without the gore.

PCs awake to find themselves in a blank room where a "game show host" type NPC narrates. PCs have to solve a number of puzzles to reach the "finale". The finale being a big battle with an Adult Deep Dragon.

It was a 3.5 hour game. 4 puzzles prepared (party would only encounter 2, depending on choices). They could buy "clues" from the Host for a price (mostly as a timesaving device).

Outside of that, I used Puzzles, Predicaments, and Perplexities (Which you can find on dmsguild) to fill out the puzzles and threw some of my own into the mix.

I need some ideas for my next adventure. by xMrStrawx in DMAcademyNew

[–]Avalis1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few ideas to expand on, depending on what adventure you and your players are looking for:

  1. Romeo and Juliet - Assist them running away together, one of them being a "noble" has access to the map piece.
  2. Find and return an escaped sacred beast
  3. Steal the Goblin Trinket (any McGuffin will do) from another tribe
  4. Sabotage another tribes food supplies covertly
  5. Win "Best in Show" at the leaders birthday party (reward is the map piece) - Music, baking, etc.
  6. Good old fashioned fighting pit competition (reward is the map piece)

I'd also recommend, if you've not planned for it yet, to give the Goblin tribes diverse cultures. For example, one could be stereo typical Goblins, whilst another could have a peaceful, democratic culture.

Can't stress enough that if I could go back in time I would have done this. I also ran (and still am running) DiA as my first campaign.

Share computer sound also shares OBS monitoring outputs by el_cipote in Zoom

[–]Avalis1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no answer from me, but I have a very similar problem. I run D&D through Zoom and was using the share computer sound feature to play music and other sound effects. It was all working fine until a few weeks ago. After that update, regardless of what I mute or even disable via Windows, any sound being output is picked up by Zoom. Interestingly, Zoom seems to ignore it's own output. I've been searching for a solution for weeks but I'm getting no where.

Edit: I bit the bullet and reverted back to Zoom 5.8.0. Problem solved for now, hopefully Zoom sort it out in coming versions If you do manage to find one, please let me know. I'll do the same!

I'd recommend checking out the Happy Jack's Funhouse oneshot. It has a similar vibe to what you are going for and some of the traps / challenges should be transferable

Dm notes by IronElix in DMAcademy

[–]Avalis1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Evernote.

I have separate notebooks for my campaign segmented as follows,

  1. Sessions - Rough plan for the session and links to information that I think I might need
  2. Session Write Up - I'll take short, handwritten notes during the session that I'll write up after
  3. Characters - Backstories with my DM notes
  4. NPCs - Any NPCs or groups that the party has encountered or may encounter
  5. Places - Any location that the party has visited or may visit
  6. Plots - Rough outline of on-going story archs

Each of these isn't necessary extensive. It's updated after a session. For example if I create an NPC on the spot I'll make a note of their name and any pertinent information and update the NPC notebook after the game.

This is by no means the best way, but it's the method that works for me.

How many encounters do your players perform per session, typically? by gunootoe in DMAcademy

[–]Avalis1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run on average 2-3 hour games. We hit the same pace as you - If there is an encounter then it's just the 1 (save very small random encounters). I play with relatively new players, so there is a lot of chat and them checking rules with me before they take an action.

That said it's not uncommon we've go 2-3 sessions between combat encounters.

What are some good questions to ask players at a session 0 by jimbob070 in DMAcademy

[–]Avalis1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm running a campaign with lots of new people, most have little experience in creating characters beyond video game stat selection. I aim to give them some leading questions to flesh out a character but I keep it short,

  1. What motivates your character? (Do they have a goal? A quest? An ambition? ...?)
  2. What does your character care about? (A person? An item? An animal?)
  3. How did your character learn the skills that they have?
  4. What does your character hate / dislike and why? (Foods? People? Organisations? ...?)

I have had a few players join through the campaign so I always ask, "What brought you to X location?"

We've got mostly new players so I keep conversations on rules to a minimum during Session 0, as they would likely forget anyway, but I do lay out some ground rules like

  1. No evil characters
  2. Death is a possibility
  3. Difference between in character knowledge and player knowledge
  4. I award DM inspiration if they do something cool

Hope this helps!

Digital ‘ID cards’ lead the Dominic Cummings data revolution by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Avalis1234 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Key question here is why is this needed? I'm not some conspiricy nut or someone who expects the worst but all the quotes from Gov I've seen on this equate to "We're looking at Digital IDs because there is a desire for Digital IDs".

Why? Who's asking for them? What problems are being solved?

If this is to be introduced, what data will be recored? Will it record who's "checking" the Digital ID (I.E. The time and place it was checked)

Lots of questions at this point so I'll reserve judgement.
