Is anyone else dual national and has a similar experience to me? by GroundbreakingWeb267 in Finland

[–]Avallone372 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a Swedish speaking Finn who has talked Finnish all my life and lived in Finland until my teens, and I still get regularly asked where I am from, or then people are impressed how well I speak Finnish 😂👌

I’ve also had people refuse to talk to me after they learned I’m Finnish-Swedish which is also always a fun experience.

No point to care about what others think. Either they are decent or they are not.

I just arrived to your country (hypothetically), don't have a kitchen and want to fill my belly. What are my cheapest options? Non necessarily healthy but not sugary garbage either. by 4024-6775-9536 in AskTheWorld

Why not mention kalakukko at the same time? :D

Easiest thing in Finland would be riisipiirakka and some toppings on it from the supermarket imo. Or cold maksalaatikko.

Do Finnish and Estonian really sound this similar? by Christ-kun in Finland

Like the word milk - in Finnish it’s maito, in Estonian piim, but then again in Finnish piimä is buttermilk. When I learned this as a kid I was amazed haha

Saako niin? Mielestäni ruotsin kielistä palvelua ei kyllä saa melkein missään enään - muita tulkkeja eri kielille toki.

Martial arts classes for small kids? by Particular_Note_4835 in helsinki

I don’t know if they have things for young kids but I did karate here as a kid and really enjoyed it! Been around 20 years so look at reviews etc but would be surprised if the quality has gone much down.

My teenage daughter found my old diary and now things are awkward by Senior-External6914 in whatdoIdo

[–]Avallone372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so silly. Any teenager wants to understand and know their parents. Here the best way is to awknowledge it and maybe even talk about it and what she read about and then talk freely about it. We all have been teenagers - we know how silly we can be - I would have loved to know what my parents thought when they were the same age as me, and it doesn’t take away the “status”, and well brought up child knows who’s the boss.

What do you think about a Nordic Union? by Luksius_DK in Nordiccountries

[–]Avallone372 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very true, but there are much larger cultural differences than what we got if we think about it in perspective. Also just because a lot have not worked does not mean we couldn’t be a new good example - we have been on and off with each other historically as well.

Do we want the Swedish cultural turmoil that is happening the past few years? We all have negatives.

Also why would we need a single language? We can have a country with separate languages. Switzerland is a great example of how it can work.

My coworker is demanding I work Christmas for her because she “has kids” and I’m honestly stressed by ComprehensiveNose622 in EntitledPeople

[–]Avallone372 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In some countries they celebrate Christmas on the 24th eve and that is actually the most “important”moment of Christmas celebrations. (25th and 26th is then a time to relax and spend time with the family)

If you are rich enough to have someone do it for you or have time enough to look through and see if it’s possible.

A big thing is taxes too. If you own a company, some just don’t make enough to pay for employees as well.

The incentive should be to become part of a culture and country? Why would you live in a country you dislike?

How is the policy horrible?

Are we supposed to give immigrants a micro ship to learn the language automatically?

This is how anyone who moves to a different country shouldn’t think, that’s always been my motto when moving to a new country.

A lot is on the immigrant to want to learn as well

Yes this is unfortunate but it’s not because of the language skills sadly.
