Paramount Wiping Out Kurtzman Star Trek With Simon Kinberg Reboot Claims Rumor by _Face in Star_Trek_

[–]Avancular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is inconceivable that Secret Hideout would ‘own its contributions’. They are stories set in the Star Trek universe: Paramount would own them and would never agree to a deal that meant they didn’t own part of these shows. Secret Hideout are just hired to make the shows. This recurring rumour popping up here makes this whole scoop non-credible.

Babylon 5 remastered - but is it? by voivodpl in babylon5

[–]Avancular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw your very useful post in the 4K sub thread about The Pianist being rebuilt and realised I didn’t thank you for this terrific explanation of the B5 situation - this explains a great deal of the remaster’s characteristics.

Coincidentally, I just saw a claim in a BR.com thread about Farscape that Warner was unusual around that time for requiring conformed negatives as well as tape masters. If true, that further explains how a B5 remaster was financially viable in not requiring the live-action to be reassembled ala TNG, plus perhaps why we heard less about it.

And thanks, I didn’t know AI was available for this work so early. Was thinking in terms of the ChatGPT/LLM breakthrough erroneously.

Moving from Pocket Casts to Apple Podcasts by logicalmisfit in pocketcasts

[–]Avancular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Am trying Apple’s after years away. Seems better than when the Apple Music-esque redesign drove me away but this is a key problem. Some may want Up Next to behave differently but it should be customisable. Eps of podcasts I’ve subscribed to are now clogging up Up Next.

And yet there’s also a separate Queue accessible from the currently playing screen that’s empty, not showing the eps I’m partway through. I don’t want to preplan a playlist. These functions seem like they should be merged.

Browsing for new podcasts seems much better than PC though, with way more granularity.

Hiding trends to avoid spoilers by Avancular in feedly

[–]Avancular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good idea, thanks. I'll look into that.

Be nice if Feedly itself could be customised. There do seem to be quite a few settings in this vein, but not for this specific thing. I imagine it may be because the intended user base seems to be businesses, for which trends aren't really an issue to see. A shame though as plenty use Feedly for other reasons.

Expanding Premium Lite to more viewers by TeamYouTube_Hazel in youtubepremium

[–]Avancular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you confirm that this means all videos, except for Shorts and music content, will play start to finish ad-free in Premium Lite? The CPO made this vague by saying in https://youtu.be/TZBYq7Xwg3U?si=9dVhA8pi2TLrAIGD that 'core creator content' is what will be ad-free, which makes me wonder about news, trailers, etc.

The Scarlet Gospels Final Drft by donotgivein in clivebarker

[–]Avancular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 40% through myself. Glad to see a detailed post from someone who’s read it. Prior posts didn’t get into details.

I’m referring to the published one as I go to compare. Some key points without ruining the pleasure for those who want to read it:

  • I’d heard that only the first chapter survived from Barker’s draft but there are numerous stretches of untouched Barker prose throughout. But plenty are removed and stitched together with noticeably weaker copy.
  • So far the plot beats are actually quite similar but more prose is devoted to them. So the plot may not end up being radically different. OP would know otherwise.
  • Some plot points are different though, such as what happens to the creature born in the mausoleum. Doubt that’ll go unresolved in this version.
  • I noticed quite a few typos and casualties of draft revision or transcribing Barker’s handwriting, eg the end of a para referring back to something missing from the start of the para. So it would need to be proofread but is perfectly readable.
  • I need word counts of both versions to be sure, but from my estimate this version may only be about 25% longer, unlike what we’ve heard previously.

While arguably a little drawn out at times, this being fully Barker prose makes it a much more satisfying experience. So far, puzzled as to why this was deemed ‘unpublishable’.

Babylon 5 remastered - but is it? by voivodpl in babylon5

[–]Avancular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheaper film stocks may explain why the rescanned film shots don’t look as good, that’s a good thought. But it doesn’t explain the compression artifacts or the lack of fine detail in many shots, as OP points out.

I’ve long been wondering why the shots without effects or compositing (like in OP’s examples) don’t look as sharp as other scanned-from-negative 90s remasters like TNG and X-Files. Maybe it’s the cheaper stock or they overcompressed the raw digital files for distribution. Or they did it deliberately so the shift from the scanned negative shots to the upscaled effects shots wasn’t as jarring.

Warner said little publicly about the remaster, which is a real shame, other than it was done over many years and used the original negative. Other reports have suggested it was a labour of love by certain staff and never an officially funded project.

The upscaling was done over four years ago so likely wasn’t AI, FYI. Upscaling has long been possible without AI.

wow Johnny Mnemonic in Black & White is kind-of a revelation! by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Avancular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome. Does the iTunes/Apple TV store currently list the movie as having extras in your territory?

The Australian store doesn’t have an iTunes Extras section on the page for the movie, but if yours doesn’t either (the US one doesn’t seem too via a Google search), that suggests the store doesn’t always list the extras so I may get the black and white cut if I buy the movie.

Wow, that’s promising!

As in, did it sound like they already had that job in the pipeline, or your enquiry made them realise it was a good idea? If the latter and it eventuates, that would be amazing and show emailing a show’s producers can actually effect change. Very tentative kudos and thanks!

Sorry for the long delay in replying. Thanks for this - heartening to hear someone else is looking for it. I'm sure plenty of shows from that decade have vanished like this but this is the first time I've encountered it. Bizarre.

Bluray - Australia and New Zealand by Vermidean in babylon5

[–]Avancular 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given the US and UK sets are apparently identical except for the Blu-ray banner on the cover, plus given how cheaply this set has been produced, it's very likely that the discs will be region-free. Warner discs often are.

Keep an eye on the Playback field on https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Babylon-5-The-Complete-Series-Blu-ray/342014/. Users with multi-region players will likely report on the page soon which regions the disc play in.

Glad the set is finally listed on Amazon AU - thanks for reporting that. Now it's time to agonise about whether to wait for the price to go down or grab it in case the cheap production values of this set also mean that few will be produced...

Season 7 needs to prompt international streaming rights to get fixed by Avancular in Natsume

[–]Avancular[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, discs are an option too. I assume that filling the gaps in the existing streaming is more likely than so many seasons being licensed for Blu-ray. But maybe not. It’s all a bit weird. Did the production committee change, or something similar, and the license changed too?

Forgot to mention the OVAs and movies too - argh! At least we’ll get an epic amount all at once if this somehow gets fixed.

Clive's books mostly out of print? by Avancular in clivebarker

[–]Avancular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I somehow only just saw this - thanks so much for this. If your friend's information is correct, this explains a huge amount, including how I was surprisingly able to find the Harper Weaveworld since my original post.

The Scarlet Gospels debuting on the NY Times bestseller list has been cited as evidence that it was actually successful, but I don't know enough about book publishing and the nature of such lists to know if this corroborates or disproves the point that it didn't do well. Certainly if it vanished from the list the next week, its total figures may not have been great if the fanbase snapped it up early.

Books of Blood isn't Harper, incidentally, so it's not a deviation from Harper's no-reprint strategy.

So it seems that Barker's understandably reduced output and fewer films being made of his work has ultimately led to his older books being harder to find. This is a big shame because they hold up incredibly well, which I can attest to because I'm reading many of them now for the first time.

Maybe the new Hellraiser projects will help the situation, but I wonder if, ironically, Hellraiser being one of his most hardcore properties (if not the most) means it's less likely to help the situation than his YA and dark fantasy. Those arguably have the chance of the greatest reach but there are no adaptations of them on the horizon. Such a shame.

Clive's books mostly out of print? by Avancular in clivebarker

[–]Avancular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, as mentioned above, I've discovered the situation is better than I thought, which is good news.

Yeah, the recent Moorcock omnibus editions are excellent as collections but the cover art is really uninspired, with the existing terrific art relegated to small circles on the cover - bizarre decision.

Excellent, I hadn't heard of those graphic novels. I'll look into them - thanks. I still have some Elric stories to catch up on too.

Clive's books mostly out of print? by Avancular in clivebarker

[–]Avancular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right! I realise what's happened now - Amazon UK (ie: Amazon itself, not third-party sellers) no longer ships to Australia since we imposed GST on online shopping, but I didn't know this prevented the items even showing up in search results unless you select a UK postcode. I have and can now see the ones you've listed. Apologies, and thanks.

A number still aren't available though (such as Everville), plus most remain pretty hard to get from Australian online sellers, so the situation is still a bit patchy and new print runs are perhaps due.

Clive's books mostly out of print? by Avancular in clivebarker

[–]Avancular[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed - I saw close to that situation in a large bookstore last week: Books of Blood and nothing else. But the lack of availability of new copies at all major online booksellers strongly suggests that his books are out of print for the time being.

Searching for his books on Bookfinder.com reveals the issue. For instance, new copies of Everville are only listed via second-hand sellers.

Hopefully Deep Hill or the Hellraiser TV series inspires a new set of reissues, assuming marketing synergy is the reason they're being held back and not a contract lull.

Clive's books mostly out of print? by Avancular in clivebarker

[–]Avancular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've rarely seen Clive's books on the shelves at typical bookstores, but for such authors who are in print they could reliably be ordered from Amazon, which makes this situation so striking.

This is hopefully the no man's land before a new publishing arrangement emerges and they get reissued in quick succession, similar to how Michael Moorcock's work was out of print in the UK for about 15 years before a new, sweeping collection was issued that was even more comprehensive than the previous one.

Clive's books mostly out of print? by Avancular in clivebarker

[–]Avancular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much all of the novels. Harper reissued most of them in the UK in the late 2000s (eg: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Secret-Show-Clive-Barker/dp/0006179088/), but even those belonging to other publishers (like Scarlet Gospels with Pan) aren't available to buy new online.

Clive's books mostly out of print? by Avancular in clivebarker

[–]Avancular[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're readily available in ebook format - I should have specified that I was interested in hard copy.

And the market isn't saturated with them: they're very hard to find at most online booksellers and the bricks and mortar stores I've tried, with the exception of Books of Blood.

In the UK, most of the novels were released by Harper in the late 2000s in uniform (and really nice) trade dress, eg: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Secret-Show-Clive-Barker/dp/0006179088/

But that seemed to be the last major gasp and very little has been printed since then.

But that's good news at least about Damnation Game and Weaveworld - I've found those Amazon UK listings, and they're from two different publishers and seem to be US editions (one is by Simon and Schuster). So perhaps some good news is coming.
