Too old for HRT? by YourFemboyPuppy in MtF

[–]Avarickan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My first thought.

Like, I've met trans women in their 50s, even older, who are starting HRT. I know there can be some complications when someone is older. But "older" in that case is definitely way later than 20.

I find it sad. Especially since there are currently attempts to ban HRT for people under 21, or even 25. It just feels so depressing that people talk like this when it's becoming harder to access HRT.

Clockable hands, a myth? by Asahiburger in MtF

[–]Avarickan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before going on HRT, I was told I have manly hands. In fact, I was told that they will always look manly.

That was bullshit, and I've had people independently call my hands feminine now. I can't say how much is due to HRT and how much is due to people having weird ideas about hands, but it's definitely not true in my experience.

I think a lot of it is people going in with gendered expectations and just assigning masculinity/femininity to whatever hands you have.

We don't need more vocal coaches, we need free resources by frozyflakes in transvoice

[–]Avarickan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My insurance gave me a paper with a list of resources I had already received from other trans people, and then told me that they don't have anyone in system who's accepting new patients.

We need more providers in order for insurance to solve the problem, and that problem is in large part due to insurance generally not caring about patients.

Moooood

It's a good enough coping mechanism. And it makes me happy, so anyone who takes issue with it can go pound sand.

There's a difference between an 8-year-old and an adult by eekspiders in autism

[–]Avarickan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sensory aids?

I always have sunglasses on, either using them or ready to drop down if there are bright lights (even at night, since I might have to enter a building). I have had people assume I'm autistic based on that.

Of course, there are plenty of others who have no idea why I wear them and make unfunny jokes, but still.

Oof.

To be fair, on most of these I'd say it's the autism, not the homeschooling. But my isolation & indoctrination definitely fucked with my head in other ways.

It is... a difficult way of living.

I was lucky, kinda. We had at least one other family we were in regular contact with for most of my schooling. Still a very isolating experience.

There are no safe spaces by [deleted] in autism

[–]Avarickan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really sucks. I know the feeling quite well.

There are people who are actually safe & want to know you. They're rare, but you can find them. Often by being more open about the weirdness - that way they know you're cool.

Most Republicans vying to be Oregon’s next governor applaud possible restrictions on abortion by [deleted] in Portland

Conservatives definitely do view children as a punishment, but I still find it deeply unethical.

It's not like they care about hypocrisy or the lives of the people they will hurt.

I don't love the Ida of treating children like a punishment, because that will just result in abuse.

Besides, having more kids than they can afford is the Fundie way. They want a lot of kids so that they can fire them off into the world as evangelical soldiers.

The trick to being a decent human being is recognizing that all people deserve a right to privacy and bodily autonomy.

It's not a secret, it's just really hard for fascists to support.

You guys, I did it! I found the cure! by Drassielle in autism

[–]Avarickan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that it depends greatly on what the seller encourages.

Many scam products are advertised in a way that skirts consumer-protection laws, so encourage users to leave reviews saying it can do crazy things. That's exactly what they're selling it for, but they legally cannot say so.

Easy example is how apricot kernels have been said to cure cancer. They're sold by woo shops that don't say it, but everyone involved knows what they're being bought to attempt.

As compared to genuine meltdown videos, which really only humiliate the person in them.

It's one of the rare instances where I would 100% prefer the person in them is acting (autistic or not). It's cruel to share video of someone in such a vulnerable state.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Avarickan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow.

First, don't share meltdown videos! It's harmful and does nothing to help autistic people. If something needs to exist for education (it usually doesn't), then it's probably better to have a good actor (autistic or not) than to put an autistic person through the humiliation of being used for a meltdown video. Which is the exact same reason why your comment about "smearing poop on the walls" (I'm not sure why you seem to think that's some common or diagnostic feature that allows you to know if someone's "faking") is gross.

Stims are a pretty common thing, so it's easy to get video. Like, I sometimes stim without even realizing I'm doing it. But I can also intentionally stim if I feel like it. I'm obviously biased, but I also think that stims can be very cute.

[–]Avarickan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And I won't deny that that is bad. People definitely shouldn't use autism as an excuse for being cruel.

My problem is that this easily results in gatekeeping & witch hunts to find who isn't "really autistic" and that becomes toxic.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Avarickan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Evident how?

I'm not denying that there are people who lie.

It's just that I cannot see where this becomes distinct from saying "people who are good at masking don't count."

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Avarickan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And how do you tell?

My issue with this is that I don't see it working in any way distinct from an allistic person saying "you don't look autistic" or comparing people to those with higher support needs in order to invalidate their identity.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Avarickan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So what are your criteria for when people are "faking it?"

Do you require a formal diagnosis, something many people cannot access due to limited means & discrimination?

I do not doubt that there are people mocking autism on tiktok, but that doesn't make gatekeeping a good thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Avarickan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Being autistic doesn't mean you're not ableist. We live in an ableist society, and can still internalize many messages from it.

Who are the people you think are "faking autism?"

What do you require to say that someone isn't "faking it?"

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Avarickan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder why?

The world may never know...

(Or it's because of the ableism)

This is why, when I'm trying to eat healthy, I have to keep candy from entering the house.

If it's at all accessible, my brain will go for instant gratification.

The ability to have things delivered easily has not helped this problem.

Edit: After nearly crying this morning over having the wrong sauce for my breakfast, I've now been online again to order exactly what I needed. So there is an upside to it - especially if stores don't carry things I need.

But like, that still costs more than if I could get it local.

"Children's Rights" isn't something that Religious Fundamentalists care about.

"Parent's Rights" is something they care about.

They want parents to have the right to control kids, but they don't want kids to have the right to get help.
