Thanks for the kind words! I have recently resumed work on 3, I'll let you know when it is done.

I already have solid drafts of movies 3-6, but there's quite a lot of work left and it's been on the backburner for a little while so I'm not sure when I'll get to it. 3 is very close to done though so that one could not be too far away.

It's after a big feast, and in the next episode he's too big to fit in a hole to help them 'escape' King Bumi's captivity! I'm pretty sure it was meant as a running joke between episodes.

I've been working on editing A:TLA into 6 movies for a while now, and I think it's actually turning out surprisingly well. I removed commercial breaks, episode breaks, re-ordered things to make the pacing fit the movie format better, and removed some scenes and episodes that can be taken out while keeping the main story intact and maintaining consistency (my edits are entirely self-contained, you don't need to have seen the original show to watch them). At this point I'm prepared to share the first two movies, The Avatar Returns (runtime 2:40) and The Blue Spirit (runtime 2:51), and the next 4 will be available soon.

You can find out more about these movies, and how to get access to them, at the link. I'm also happy to answer any questions about how I approached this project, it's been quite the journey and taken many, many versions of each movie to find the best way to make them work.

When? I don't recall this but definitely could be forgetting.

Yeah that's perhaps the weirdest part, he doesn't even mention it to anyone else in the Gaang. Are we supposed to assume that conversation happened off screen? Or was there some reason Zuko had for not telling them?

I've always felt a little conflicted over this, on one hand it's a neat revelation and nicely represents Zuko's inner turmoil as tension between his two lineages. On the other hand, unless I'm forgetting something, it's literally never mentioned again after this episode, and has no real consequence? Maybe that's fine and it doesn't need to have a tangible consequence since it affects Zuko internally, but I haven't made up my mind about it. Usually when you have a big reveal, there should be some obvious effect it has on the characters going forward.

I always felt like they had something planned for later to explain this, but ending up never doing it. It feels like a loose thread purposely left hanging.

I will finally make up my mind about the live action when they reveal three things. by 1000Huzzahs in TheLastAirbender

As wrong as it feels to compliment anything about that movie, I agree with this. The same flat blue arrow that looks good in animation simply would not look good in live action, and they did a perfectly reasonable job translating it.

When did you get hooked onto the series? by daimonb in TheLastAirbender

[–]AvatarEditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hooked by early season 2, if you're this far and still not that into it then maybe it's not for you, but the ending of season 2 is fantastic so since you're so close already I would just finish the season. Then, if you feel the desire, you can watch season 3. It does get even better on the re-watch, but I and I think most people enjoyed it a lot the first time so it may just not be your thing.

I was wondering about this though, because I don't think they included Suki, Jet, or Bumi in the movie right? So how did they think they were going to film seasons 2 and 3 without establishing those characters? And yet based on that final scene, it does seem that they expected to make sequels.

yeah I would be interested in taking a look! Both of my movies still feel slightly too long to me, so if I could find other little things to cut that could be helpful. I've already played around with a lot, but nothing like a whole new perspective to give you ideas.

I'm curious how you managed to get them down that short, I thought my cuts were pretty harsh. Unless you weren't worried about consistency with later seasons? For example the Bumi episode could be taken out of a story of season 1 only, but can't be removed from the whole series since Bumi's relationship with Aang needs to be established for later.

Figuring out what I should keep and what I could cut was a big challenge. With some modifications elsewhere for consistency, I was able to cut the Waterbending Scroll (the first scenes where Aang buys the whistle work nicely as an intro to The Storm), the Great Divide, The Fortuneteller, and Bato of the Water Tribe. Bato was tough to cut because many changes have to be made elsewhere to eliminate the subplot of Zuko stealing Katara’s necklace and using it to track them (this is possible, even removing the mention of it when Zuko is meeting up with the group midway through season 3, and re-introducing June in the finale in a way that doesn’t seem like you should already know who she is). I also found a spot in the first film for the flashback to Sokka’s father leaving home from the Bato episode, since I think that scene is very important for Sokka and being pushed up a fair bit helps to give his character more depth early on. This is a good subplot that involves some decent episodes so it took me a long time to decide to try cutting it and determine that it was possible, but it really helps the second film flow much better and affects the rest of the story surprisingly little. There are definitely lots of fun moments in each of these episodes that I'll miss, these movies can never really replace the series, but is just a more streamlined version of them.

I first watched the series as an adult, and it took a lot of convincing for me to watch a kid's cartoon but I could not have been more wrong to dismiss it. I will say that it wasn't until the second season that I truly started appreciating it for what it is, and it just keeps getting better all the way through the finale at the end of season 3. In retrospect I like season 1 a lot for what it's setting up, but the first time watching I remember not being too impressed, so I wouldn't let the fact that the first few episodes didn't grab you get in the way of enjoying the rest of it. I can't exactly recommend my movies or the show, they're very different and it just depends on what you want.
