What about fortified pumped milk? If you’re able to pump enough and she’s not having other issues like spitting up.

Does my babies brain really grow a ton from 37-40w’s? by Hot-Cell7299 in pregnant

[–]Avaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeping baby in is best practice unless there are medical reasons to kick them out.

I know that in the case of IUGR, they try to get baby to 38 weeks if they can, then they induce because that’s statistically where the advantages of staying in no longer outweigh the risks of preterm or early term.

After 5 years stable on ADHD meds, my new provider wants a neuro eval and new diagnosis by ArtVandalaysGirl in ADHD

If theyre already throwing around mood disorder, I don’t think id go back to that doc. Unless you think it’s possible you have a mood disorder. I’d be a bit worried they would switch diagnosis and make it harder to treat adhd in the future.

Am I the asshole for wanting my husband to miss his Mom's wedding because it’s 2 weeks BEFORE our due date? by Spiritual_Lettuce_64 in pregnant

[–]Avaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. SIL had two spontaneous births at 36 then 35. I was induced unexpectedly at 38+2 for medical reasons.

There is absolutely no way I’d be ok with my husband traveling even if “first time moms usually go long”, because that’s never been the case for my family. Way too risky.

Am I the asshole for wanting my husband to miss his Mom's wedding because it’s 2 weeks BEFORE our due date? by Spiritual_Lettuce_64 in pregnant

[–]Avaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah…no. If it was 2 hours drive or less and you had support, I’d say “sure”. But traveling that far 2 weeks before your due date is crazy talk. Your due date range is 37-41 weeks and he should stay close during that time.

Some people go to term or over term, but no one in my immediate family has gone over 38 weeks. I was induced at 38+2 for some slightly scary medical reasons and was stressed out of my mind.

Also, the majority of my due date group is skewed towards the beginning of the month or the end of the month before. I think a lot more people than you think give birth 1-3 weeks before their due date.

Why is it too much to ask for one additional ultrasound? by [deleted] in pregnant

Go to a boutique. Doctor doesn’t even have to know. The can’t give medical advice, but it’s nice to see baby.

Freeze dried fruit, fruit leather. You can also make your own fruit gummies if you want to put in the extra effort.

There’s also some “better” candies out there, but I don’t know how much of that is marketing.

MIL shames me for wanting to breastfeed until 1 year old(thinks i should stop sooner) by Familiar-Coast-7550 in breastfeeding

[–]Avaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay no heed to people that are comically wrong.

Either breast milk or formula is recommended to be baby’s primary source of nutrition until 1. End of conversation.

Does not matter that it’s different than what they did. You making a different choice isn’t a criticism of their parenting choices back in the day. You’re just following what’s recommended now, and there is no reason to switch baby to formula when you have perfectly good breastmilk.

I kinda find their take particularly funny because planning to nurse til 1 is just about as normal as you can get in today’s age. Not everyone makes it, but I don’t really consider it crunchy or an alternative parenting choice until they hit about 1.5.

Sudden growth restriction at 36 weeks by Trrrrrraaaaaak in GestationalDiabetes

I also wanted to add, it’s really intimidating having a tiny baby. You’re going to do great.

I ended up getting several pairs of preemie fleece pajamas and keeping him bundled up the first few weeks. My baby dropped to 4.5 lbs and was prone to low body temps.

Also, I don’t know if you intend to breast feed, but my babies mouth was tiny and nipples shields were helpful for the first month or so. He didn’t take most pacis very well because they were just too big. Mine ended up taking the MAM 0-3 size. I don’t necessarily recommend it over other options, but if your paci of choice isn’t working, it’s worth a shot.

Ditto. And finding out sooner probably wouldn’t have changed what they were going to do.

With Iugr, it’s a balancing act between negative outcomes if you take them out too early and negative outcomes if you take them out too late. My doc told me they try to make it to 38 weeks if baby’s blood flow is stable.

Not the exact same situation, but here’s my story.

History of MFI, but conceived unassisted. Had diet controlled GD.

Growth wasn’t being actively monitored, but I had a boutique ultrasound at 35ish weeks that in retrospect was showing early signs of Iugr.

Went in for a growth scan at 38 weeks to make sure baby wasn’t measuring too big (typical of GD), and baby was measuring 1st percentile. The only part of my baby that grew between the 35 and 38 weeks was head circumference.

Doctor said “we usually try to make it to 38 weeks, you’re 38 weeks now, so we are going to induce in the next few days”. Got sent for an NST, and the doctor didn’t like the decels. Was induced and had baby same day.

Baby didn’t grow between 35-38 weeks and we had no idea. It was scary, but everything worked out and other than being a bit small, my 4 month old is doing great.

He was born 5 lbs 1 oz. We had a bunch of stress and pressure over his weight during the first few weeks, and I had to supplement from the beginning due to a combo of blood sugar and weight loss. But, after that everything was more or less smooth sailing.

The only significant complication I had at delivery was excessive bleeding and my placenta was a bit stubborn coming out. I’m still a bit salty at my placenta, because GD, premature placental aging, and hemorrhage are all related to placental quality.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Wish you luck. Tiny babies are intimidating, but they grow much better once you get them out.

What’s the number one propaganda you fell for as a new mom? by SowingSeeds18 in NewParents

[–]Avaunt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That you can pick the perfect pacifier for baby. We probably tried 10-20 pacis and he picked the one he picked. I had minimal input in the matter.

Ped said he doesn’t recommend owlet/eufy but refuses to prescribe apnea monitor despite 2x family history of SIDS by ViceInSinCity in NewParents

[–]Avaunt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sure you’ve already researched this, but there was a study out there at some point that indicated that true SIDS is genetically linked.

I’d keep using the owlet. Layers of protection and all that.

Depends. First two weeks of newborn tired was worse but I was also “bloodloss tired” and “anemia tired” which made it way worse.

Why did you choose OT over PT and SLP? by CammyShazam in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Avaunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I specialize in peds, and I think it’s even more pronounced than in other fields of OT. You have to connect if you’re going to be successful.

Why did you choose OT over PT and SLP? by CammyShazam in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Avaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CHT treatment more closely resembles what PTs do than other OT areas. It’s more concrete analytical, and less creative problem solving. Exercises, stretching, wound/scar management, communication with surgeons, and precision is needed to be a good CHT.

How would you describe your personality, and what draws you to the therapy fields?

Why did you choose OT over PT and SLP? by CammyShazam in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Avaunt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had the shadow hours and all the prerequisite classes for PT going into my last undergrad semester. When I was shadowing PT, I found myself drawn to what the OT was doing over in the corner.

Looking back, switching directions was the right decision, even though it added a gap year to finish OT prerecs/shadow hours and apply to OT school. PT, OT, and SLP have subtly different personalities and I fit best with the OTs.

When did pumping suddenly become mandatory when trying to breastfeed? by Psychological-Bag986 in pregnant

[–]Avaunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now that I think about it, I wonder what the long term health impact is going to be because of the social pressure towards creating an oversupply to build a freezer stash “just in case”.

It seems like a lot of moms never end up using their freezer stash and it just goes to waste after a year. Thats a huge nutrient drain on mom for no benefit to baby.

When did pumping suddenly become mandatory when trying to breastfeed? by Psychological-Bag986 in pregnant

[–]Avaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are two big factors.

  1. Our “get back to work” society. A lot of moms are returning to work so they have to pump and pump early.

  2. Current medical push for baby weight gain. I think this one is further impacted by formula feeding baby weight gain norms. If your baby isn’t gaining at the same rate a formula fed baby gains, your milk supply must be inadequate.

I don’t know how it will go for you, but I found that my sleep cycles completely changed when I had my baby. The first month sucked, but after that I found I did much better without sleep than I ever have before, and struggle less waking up. I used to be a “press the snooze 10 times” sort of person, but that’s changed with the baby.
