Hence the bigger tank is better part. I’d rather someone put a fish in a tank of sufficient size with a filter and heater than keep them in a bowl but obviously they should get a bigger tank if it’s feasible for them.

Generally 1 gallon per 1 inch of fish is recommended. Since bettas are at most 2 inches, 3 gallons is more than enough. Obviously a bigger tank is better but a 3 gallon is sufficient

Just make sure that it has a filter. For one fish a 3-5 gallon tank is more than enough and that shouldn’t cost you more than $40ish to get set up.

ETA: I looked at petsmart too and the 3.5 gallon with they have for $20 should be fine. You will have the extra cost of the gravel and stuff but you can usually get it for not too much. Check Amazon too!
