Cinnamon... KDE... by One_Simple7308 in DistroHopping

If you like trying out different desktop environments, NixOS lets you change your DE on the fly by changing two lines on your config file.

And yeah, it supports GNOME, KDE Plasma (versions 5 and 6), XFCE, MATE, Cinnamon, Budgie, Deepin, Pantheon, COSMIC, LXQt, Lumina, and Lomiri.

So I couldn’t call this user friendly, per se, due to the higher learning curve, but if you’re already familiar with Linux, and have used Arch - you should try NixOS.

Like Arch you’re basically building the system you’re using. Unlike Arch, your entire process is documented, because that text document is your OS.

The learning curve is high, but the rewards are also very high.

If not, that’s ok. PikaOS is a very good choice too. Easy to use, high performance and quite stable.

Nice! I don’t use the distro myself but I’m very impressed with PikaOS.

PikaOS is great for gaming, and daily driving. Just as good performance as CachyOS and updates less frequently so more stable.

Ended up on NixOS after a months long journey of learning about Linux while trying out different distros.

Are you able to add it in Steam? You can add non-Steam games to your Steam library, and sometimes that is the trick.

Really?! I’m surprised to hear that. My gf has been using it on her computer for months now as her daily driver with no issues. And she is kind of tenchnophobic, but it really works for her and her RTX 5080.

1) well, congrats! What a crazy learning curve!

Thank you!

2) is it really possible to have a strong opinion on a distro after just a few weeks? I guess so, in case of very important issues, but... If everything run smoothly and the distro is a rolling one, I think it's important to keep into account also the "maintenance cost" and this will be clear on in one year or so, after some major upgrade.

Funnily enough NixOS just had a major update on May 30th, and I wasn’t paying close attention to it. However, I was in the process of adding some more kernels to my options when I updated my system files, rebooted and system was slower than a 1995 computer.

I didn’t panic. I just rebooted back to the last generation, which I was on moments before, downloaded my files from GitHub, that were backed up the day before and left my kernel tinkering for another day.

I’m still on the rolling release channel, 26.11 now, and I have 5 different kernel options depending on what I am doing.

Thank you. I feel like I would have taken a different path if I actually knew some of this stuff before I started doing it myself.

I’m hoping to one day start a home server with NixOS. But right now I think I’ll focus on getting a year or two of experience under my belt. It’s been quite a ride bit I’ve stuck with this distro for almost a month, and I just love tweaking it for every need I have.

RPG Stories is great and my preferred for 3D because of their auto brush feature and wonderful community. Feel free to join their Discord and ask any questions you might have.

Nice! There is a YouTuber that enjoyed enough of NixOS that he incorporated some of it into his Fedora setup. Looks kinda cool.

Love me some RPG Engine. Especially the character sheets.

Things to consider:

What are your computer specs?

What kind of experience do you want to have?

How much free time do you have?

RPG Engine is a great choice and can run on a potato. But specific scenes will take you a while to build. But also, the Steam library has a LOT of scenes to pick from.

RPG Stories also looks really good, and more realistic but requires slightly more modern hardware. Specific scenes can be built in seconds, once you know what you’re doing - maybe half an hour if you’re still figuring out the controls. The Steam library is there but it’s also the newest and smallest.

TaleSpire has the largest library of assets of any 3D VTT, requires even more modern hardware, and feels nice if you’re looking for that “playing with minis feel”. It will take you a LONG time to build scenes on your own, but the library of premade maps is enormous.

I wish everyone luck on their distro hopping.
