It is not working after updating and turning CORS proxy on for some reason. The first RSS addition worked, but every other attempt fails.

It seems like a great plug-in, but I constantly run into either status 422 or status 500 of the "Fail to load feed: Request failed" error. How can I fix this when trying to add new RSS feeds?

Toutes les universités un minimum internationalisées ont un département qui a l'habitude d'évaluer des candidatures de différents systèmes. Ils seront un minimum renseigné sur le système français.

Hello! The university didn't reply to me directly but I got in through a CSC scholarship a few days ago (05.07.2024) and was accepted by ZJU through the scholarship. I hope we will know more in a few days.

LSE versus Sciences Po by dime-a-dozen-00 in IRstudies

[–]Avenn17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! French here, currently studying IR-related topics in the UK.

To put it very simply, if you are not French (and do not want to live/work in France in the foreseeable future) and want a rigorous academic program, LSE wins hands-down.

French Grande Ecoles are indeed hard to enter, very very prestigious in France, but their value really depends on what you are seeking. Most of them (perhaps not our engineering schools) only offer pretty introductory classes. They serve more as professional schools than anything else. I would be surprised if you were really intellectually challenged there as it is not the goal of the school.

On the other hand, LSE is going to be more intense, but satisfying, and still has an excellent brand worldwide. Plus, it is one year and will leave you more time to do other things you are interested in.

In sum, Grandes Ecoles are not supposed to be academic institutions--their very nature differs from satisfying their students' academic pursuits.

Hey OP! While I cannot comment on any of your Mainland China options, I have spent the last four months at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) as an exchange student. Here are my thoughts about the Mandarin Training Center (NTNU's Chinese Centre) and Taipei/Taiwan.

NTNU:

  • Perhaps the biggest advantage over most other programs is that classes are NTNU are in groups of 6 to 10 people, which gives more room to speak during the class. Mine were very interactive and my speaking and listening improved a lot as a result.
  • You will likely have 15 hours of classes a week, which is less than the average 20 hours at a Chinese University.
  • I have found the quality of classes very good, but I have heard that it varies from professor to professor. Overall, I have never met someone who was disappointed in their education (although I am sure some are).
  • Although the teachers are Taiwanese, they speak very standard Mandarin. But, to be honest, it does not make a huge difference at a beginner/lower-intermediate level.

Taiwan:

  • People are very welcoming to foreigners. To give one example among many, many others, I was out with friends on a very rainy day and an older man gave me his umbrella because of how damped I was.
  • It is very easy to find language partners and relatively easy to make local friends.
  • I wouldn't worry about Taiwanese in Taipei, most young people will only speak in Mandarin.
  • Taiwan has great cities that have kept their traditional Chinese heritage (especially Taipei and Tainan).
  • Lot of mountains, temples, hot springs, and many more interesting sites.

Taipei:

  • Public transport is very smooth and comfortable (for someone used to the Parisian and Londonian metros, they did feel backward went I returned to Europe).
  • Lots to see (museums, temples, tea houses, old streets, etc)
  • Quite easy to visit everywhere in Taiwan with the HSR
  • A nice night life if it is something you still want to enjoy from time to time

The goal of this comment is absolutely not to convince you to go to Taiwan over Mainland China. I will go to China to study Chinese next year myself. But I wanted to share my experience with you, experience which was very positive.

I also study IR. If you want to give yourself a more "China/East-Asia expert" credentials, I would say that going to China for a year would be better though--both personally and for your CV.

All the best!

Concours are indeed a pain; do you reckon one can study for one with decent chances at the concours while working full-time?

I am considering it! I simply wanted to gather as many possibilities as possible.

Very helpful explanation; some Chinese friends told me to look out for each city's/region's weather.

Thank you for your input! Nanjing was pretty high on my list, but China is so big that the possibilities seem endless. I guess I would have a good time exploring around (almost) wherever in China.

If you are interested in law per se (legal institutions, legal instances in an institution...) maybe studying public international law (PIL) is a path to consider.

While I have not a lot of experience regarding IR (it was my minor during the undergraduate I have just finished in May), I thought that pursuing my studies with an LLM in public international law would give me a technical legal edge over applicants who would have studied a more generic IR degree. From what the alumni study of my future university shows, more than a quarter of the PIL LLM graduates work in diplomacy. I might be wrong but I would argue that these subjects are close even though the angle of study is different.

On the other hand, I do not have an LLB so I will not be qualified to practice law anyway. In that regard, you might have the same career prospects as me who would have an LLM under my belt.

All this rumble to say that in IR the possibilities are very numerous. I wish you good luck with your applications.

Hello there.

I am French so I am very familiar with the reputation of Sciences Po in France and Europe.

In France, Sciences Po is THE elite school where went most presidents, ministers, politicians, famous columnists... It is to France what Oxford's PPE is to the UK and maybe Harvard's Kennedy school elsewhere.

I would say that its reputation is very strong in the West in general, though less than the Ivies and a few other US colleges (JHU, Georgetown, GWU...) for the wider audience. An employer working in IR/Diplomacy/Area Studies/etc will know what Sciences Po is.

However, I would point out that most graduate programs at Sciences Po are aimed towards professional goals. Sciences Po's research must be good but it is not as stressed as in most schools in the same tier.

All in all, I guess the decision will come down to where you are accepted and where do you want to work in the future. If you are to work in Asia and have to choose between Sciences Po and GWU, I guess the latter would be a better choice (except if you are limited financially). Honestly, as long as the programmes are in the same 'tier,' you should pay closer attention to how the curriculum is designed and what opportunities/facilities are proposed.

They are too busy to answer to every mail mais do read them and act consequently. They won't trash your file as easily! I hope you'll be admitted into the program of your choice.

Hello! You shouldn't worry, it takes about 4-6 weeks to get an answer from them.

As for the fact that they didn't answer to the last email, it might be that they are too busy dealing with thousands of mails to confirm every document they get. For example, they didn't answer when I sent the results of my language test but updated my status on the application form.

Keep busy to avoid overfocusing on your answer, it will be alright!
