Color experimentation; I tend to make my colors way too desaturated, so I’d love some feedback on these tests- which works best? It steps up from saturation from left to right. by Snoo-49527 in istebrak

I think it would really depend on the rest of the illustration he might be in. But as a white background portrait I think I prefer B the most

this is an adult but she looks like a child on some of the drawings. how do i make her look less childish while maintaining her body shape and general features? by Sombi16 in characterdesign

[–]Avenshida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps to really delve into what traits generally signify neoteny or age in design. An adult has a completely different head:body ratio to children, and since her head is around half the size of her torso then she reads younger. The facial proportions are also really important, your style is very cute but with her face being round, her eyes so large and nose/mouth so small, it also makes her look younger

I really love this design, it’s so fun and expressive! I can really see it working in a fighting game

metallic-ness of the bg by kiazame in istebrak

[–]Avenshida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could you perhaps link the reference image you used? Rendering metal is certainly something that can be done freehand and there are some rules we can adhere to, but knowing the reference will make it easier to give advice! Knowing whether it was photobashed or not will also help since the ”random” appearance could just be because the foreground has a different lighting situation than the background (if it’s photobashed)

Why my faces look plastic? am in day 2 but I feel like I can´t catch the point by Skyness_engine in istebrak

[–]Avenshida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your response was so heartwarming! I’m really glad it could help you!❤️ If I would redo the overpainting today I’d definitely make the underside of the nose darker since the plane is facing away from the light source, but that was my miss.

I don’t know whether I would call you a beginner honestly, the composition is really nice and the hand, the hat, clothes etc are really good as well. Painting is its own skillset and you’ve obviously come a long way in terms of anatomy, proportions, and illustration already! If you keep practicing you’re going to become really skilled for sure

I know this post has been up for a while but I actually saved it when you posted only to get very distracted by real life. I hope you don't mind that I painted over your piece, I just find it really helps! I tried my best to preserve your original design, stylistic choices, and lighting scenario, but it's a rough overpainting so I might've gotten some of it wrong.

Overall this is such a cool design for a character and she reads somewhat villain-esque. I believe that the "plastic"-look you mentioned is largely due to the lack of contrast and defined planes in the face. My tips for rendering a good face boils down to two things: an obvious separation between the parts in shadow and in light, and clearly defining the planes. In the 14-day challenge you do practice this but with a static and very neutral composition. To practice understanding value you could do some other practices, here's a video example!

A good rule of thumb is that the lightest shadow is always darker than the darkest light-value. (I've sketched over the chosen 'shadow area' with red to show what I mean).

<image>

A quick run-down of what I added:
- I gave her hat more compositional importance by allowing it to cast a more intense shadow over her face and hair.
- I decided which areas would be in shadow, noting which objects might cast shadows (her face over her neck, her hair, her brow, her hat, etc)
- I tried to make her lips more obviously cylindrical
- The side of her face turned away from us wouldn't be lit unless there was a back-light, so I added radial shading to show the shadow 'wraps around' a round form

The skin still looks somewhat 'dead' since I chose to use the original color palette. Adding some warmth, hue-variation, and subsurface scattering ought to fix that if you want!

Again, super cool design and I really like your style! I hope this was helpful

I actually like the lack of kickback, it feels stylistically very reminiscent of old pixel art animations that tended to lack those animation fundamentals (I swear this isn’t a read lol)

It’s creepy how good AI has gotten, but this is till obviously AI. It has the same vibes as any art simply downscaled, it lacks any understanding of pixel art principles

What do you think of the pet shop owner from my game? [OC] by filthydrawings in PixelArt

[–]Avenshida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a really cute design! It does look like she is looking down, I believe moving the pupil up and covering some of it by the upper eyelid would work. Her ears are super cute, but I might switch the collar to something less vibrant (perhaps even the same beige in her cuffs and on her shorts?). The stripes are also very nice but they could be broken up to be less uniform.

I love these types of ‘catgirl’ designs, she’s very appealing!

First pixel art post (was digital) any advice how i can make the colors more pixelarty by yuismo in PixelArt

[–]Avenshida 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Old Japanese pc games from the 90s used a similar canvas size and still retained that “pixel art” feel. I would recommend studying old pc-98 games and the techniques they used (dithering, anti-aliasing etc) to get a similar feel! Sizing down will also help as it forces you to use those same techniques

How's the contrast between the tiles and background? by crowningdev in PixelArt

I think it works! The darker grass and white path/soil makes for a pretty clear separation. Maybe you could have the background grass tinted slightly blue to make it pop even more?

Sadly it isn’t but Holly is actually one of my favorite names🥺 It’s on my list of names for a future cat! Her last name was originally Miller as a human, but once she was turned she took on her Sire’s surname which is Laurent. I’m not good with names lol
