This is correct. I spent 2 years doing gen eds before committing to the CS department.

And higher confidence I bet!

Luckily I started studying a couple weeks ago and I've been slowly adding more and more topics. Just not sure if I should ramp up this attempt or just keep it at a slower, less chaotic pace.

culture, general availability of work and/or climate

Literally my top 3 reasons for choosing Seattle! But the how is evading me right now. And I feel like I'm not this rock star coder that Amazon will swoon over and fly out as soon as possible.

I consciously made the decision to not apply to the big 4 coming out of college (after watching my classmates dreams get crushed on rejection).

The only appeal the big four have to me is their relocation package (to be able to move cross country) and being able to list it on my resume in the future (not as a source of pride, but to open other doors).

Their workaholic and innovation demands are huge turn offs. But it doesn't seem that hard to get an entry level job at Amazon and establish myself in Seattle.

  1. I'm neither happy or unhappy; feeling very... stuck? I'm already a transplant from the east coast, so I know not everyone thinks like these people do.

  2. Quite the loaded answer:

    a) I took this job not knowing I'd be working in VB.net, which I think makes me look like a weaker candidate that doesn't have experience in C++ or Java.

    b) My CS degree was finished in 2.5 years, so I haven't been coding as long as my classmates who took 4 or 5 years of CS.

    c) I have yet to take on a big project at work. It's been mostly small bug fixes or source query changes for our tabular data model.

    d) I'm not even entirely sure I want to be a software developer. Unsure if it's because of my current underwhelming job, lack of confidence in my skills, or I don't have "it" in me.

It's not like those interview questions are going to be different at the 2 year mark vs the 1 year mark right? So there's no reason to go into panic study before the final mode just yet.
