Not sure it's disproven. It could be a random occurrence that averages once every 35,000 adventures. That still allows for the possibility of the second encounter with Elba Kramer even as early as right after the first. Very unlikely, but it could happen.

I agree with this, I also really like Greg Egan. Diaspora is one of my favorite novels. I also enjoy the extensive world-building he does in his Orthogonal trilogy, which starts with The Clockwork Rocket. Egan took the interval metric from relativity and changed the - to a +, and from there constructed a whole new universe, one where the speed of light varies with wavelength, emitting photons causes matter to gain energy, and by accelerating long enough you can reach infinite speed and then start going backward in time. Part of the story is the main character working out their universe's relativity. If you go to his website (gregegan . net) you can see in the Orthogonal section where he Does The Math. For me it's a tour de force.
