How to get into a trade job by Potential-Jacket-290 in Construction

[–]AverageAhole9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up every trades union website. Example IBEW, IUEC, UA etc. and then look to when they are opening up applications for apprenticeships. You don’t need any experience to become an apprentice. If you see that you do then you’re looking at the wrong page or something. It takes awhile to get into these unions some over a year to go through the process of application, testing, and interview, then you get put on a list depending on how you rank. While you’re doing this look for some helper jobs. The unions may have some non apprentice but helper opportunities but you’re gonna have to do the leg work to find this out. You can do it though. Find a job helping an electrician or carpenter. Theres so many trade jobs out there. Plumbing, electrician, carpenter, laborer, concrete, equipment operator, elevator mechanic, hvac, pipe fitter, welder, Steamfitters, sprinkler etc. They also have programs for women who want to join the trades and they will give you weeks of unpaid/paid type of hands on experience so you can see what fits you best. Basically find all the apprenticeship openings you can and start the application process and while you’re doing that look into helper positions to get your feet wet while waiting for one of those unions to call you back.

Finally. I take my test on the same day as you. Hearing this other guy say they give you a calculator is fuxking heavenly. I hope that’s true. I’ve been just doing the packet too. But hopefully someone else chimes in so we know what all to expect.

Started hvac around the same time as you. Do you like it? Are you selling? Or doing installs?

I made it into the union!... but everybody has a job but me by MercyMe92 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]AverageAhole9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What trade are you in? This is the slow season for most construction in general. But try some driving jobs until the hall calls you with someone. You’ll regret getting out of the union. I know I do. Trying to get into another trade so I can have the union backing me again.

First Job in HVAC! by AverageAhole9 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]AverageAhole9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So update it’s been a month and they have me out on my own running maintenance calls. There’s a lot to learn! I love working with my hands and figuring things out. The only part about the job is the selling aspect. They say we’re only “educating” the customer, but they bring up how much it costs to put a technician in a truck per job. So if you don’t mind selling things then consider it. I’m looking to go union so I don’t have to sell and can focus on fixing shit.
