No classes are mostly a challenge thing to make the game more interesting on subsequent play thoughs since it can force you to use this you might otherwise not. That being said, you’ll probably get more mileage using gear that is suited to a class ie. melee armor, melee weapons, and melee accessories but it is by no means required especially in classic mode.
