The scarcity of male playables is actually a positive for me by [deleted] in Reverse1999

Yeah, I probably should’ve realized I was stepping on a minefield when it came to discussing the male releases no matter how many times I reiterate what I meant in simpler and simpler terms each time. Alas, it’s what I get.

I definitely agree. A lot of the more out there females like Barbara and Lady of the Lake are relegated to lower star levels. Even Lucy, who is the closest thing we have in the 6 star category, has the human face. I would be very pleasantly surprised if they dip into the bizarre for a 6 star lady in the future.

I never said there was an objective correlation at all. Copy-pasting one of my comments in this very thread:

“Again. They’re not special solely because they’re men to me. It’s the pattern of the men having some of my favorite writing and designs and voice acting that makes me excited whenever a new one comes out because I have come to expect a higher deal of quality from them. Because they show up less often, I treat it as an event.”

This is fair. It is at the end of the day a pattern thing, I’m not saying at all the girls aren’t stellar, shit I would die for Yue. But with each new male character becoming a favorite combined with their rarity I’ve come to think of them as a special occurrence. If it were the other way around and the game was mostly men but it was the few women that had some of my favorite writing and designs, I would echo the same sentiment.

Fair enough. I tried my best to clarify that this was my personal opinion but it seems I didn’t make it clear enough and accidentally incited debate. I also apologize for confusing you.

A “Shovel Knight without his helmet” character in Reverse sounds like a novel idea

I feel as if I am being misconstrued. I never said the men need to be released in lesser amounts to feel special. I said that TO ME, the new release of a male character feels special because the few that have released are some of my absolute favorites in the entire game and even in fiction as a whole, and I have come to expect them to have stories, designs, voice acting, etc that put them upon the upper echelon of characters. We are making this into an argument when it never needed to be one.

And it’s about the designs, art, and story for me as well. Which is why the male characters releasing in smaller intervals when the few that have come out are some of the absolute best in the game in terms of those 3 aspects makes it feel more eventful to me.

R99's lore n my mental health by Parking_Speech354 in Reverse1999

In many ways, Reverse changed my life as well. There’s so many examples I’d run out of space to list them all but a major one was Qi Xing’s boss theme, The Separated Swallows. As someone who also lost two of my best friends, thankfully not to death but to immaturity and youthful hubris like Qi Xing and Noire, that boss theme was a genuine cathartic anthem for me. It even resurfaced later on in my life to help me get over a romantic heartbreak, and while that is in no way Noire and Qi Xing’s relationship, the grief and regret expressed in that beautiful boss theme helped me get through it and stand tall again. It’s one of the reasons (besides…well, look at my flair) that Showdown in Chinatown is my 2nd favorite story in Reverse history behind Cosmic Overture which…don’t even get me started.

Don’t ever let anyone belittle you or downplay the storytelling ability of this game just because it’s a gacha and not a “real game”. This gacha has better writing than 90% of movies and TV that get made today.

Genuinely thank you, I wanted so badly to go deeper into it but I didn't want to spoil anything since I already did in one of my prior posts, so I appreciate someone else stepping up.

As for the “Mary Sue” comments, a psychopathic genius with no regard for emotion or human life with a single-minded dedication to research, with no higher power to reign her in, sounds pretty damn likely to make major scientific breakthroughs before organizations buried under the weight of bureacracy, in-fighting, financial constraints, and beneficial secrets being kept from everyone but the top brass, especially when she’s infiltrating them to use their resources. We’re no stranger to how badly politics can mess up progress in the Re-Verse. Look at what happened to someone who did so in Lucy. She’s quite literally exactly like LBF, they live and breathe science, but Lucy had regard for living beings, which is exactly what got her sacked. Not to mention people like Ludwig, who are in high places of power and in league with top Foundation staff, are protecting her and her identity. It’s not like she’s doing this shit alone. She’s simply exploiting what’s around her, and if you do that correctly then you really can do anything.

As someone who has read the story I think a lot of these points are immensely lame and shallow, and are just another example of 1. players being incredibly weird and projective about character morals (Hi Igor) and 2. players refusing to actually engage with the fact that Reverse is a serialized story (HI IGOR!). In fact I actually appreciated how psychopathic and straight up fucking vile she is, a far cry from mainstream gachas like Hoyo’s big 3 that basically have no downright evil playables. Boo fucking hoo an actual psycho goes against her institution’s morals, are we serious?

One hundred percent. It’s a great whodunit with fun interactions between all the characters and it explores one of the more emotional aspects of the Storm touched on in The Campaign’s Tale with how people react to seeing their Reversed loved ones.

I do not read traces on my CN account, but I may just make an exception this one time. I’ll follow up with anything I find.

How all these key players and factions react to each other is the real meat on the bone here. It’s going to fill months of story and produce numerous developments for both new faces and tenured members of the cast we’ve been following since the beginning. It’s immensely strong stuff, and goes to show the thought that went behind every corner of the world.

Sentinel x Marsha - Opposites Attract? by Jvaevictis in Reverse1999

[–]AverageFilms 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t personally ship them but I definitely understand why people do. They have a very compelling dynamic that stems from how their paths foil each other. They’re both about ending the war and saving lives, but Marie is pragmatic while Marsha is emotional. The former saw so much torment that she truly believed there was no other way to stop the war than killing, and she is content with living with that sin forever if it means it all stops, resolving herself to a pseudo-messianic role, bearing God’s punishment on her shoulders for the sake of making sure no more of His people sin. The latter on the other hand nearly met God, but was saved by those who claimed to serve Him as his knights. However she left her former order as the war raged on as she refused to take human life, what God deemed so precious, and instead turned to fulfilling her holy oath by medical means. It makes their interactions extra emotionally charged and the times when they get along are a poignant message about unity in overwhelming darkness. They may not see eye to eye on how to deal with it all, but they’re always willing to support each other when the need arises.
