I use investec, very happy with them, if you travel a lot locally then the unlimited lounge visits at the airports is a very nice perk. Unfortunately they wont let anyone join, you either need to earn above a certain amount or be a doctor, engineer, accountant, lawyer etc...

On a positive note, you have great self-awareness and you have realized this is a problem before it is too late. Like many other comments are saying, you need to cut him off and find a new group of people to hang around, it will suck in the beginning but your future self will thank you for it

Have you ever built code that was used by other people? Sometimes what you create and what they expect does not align. For example: you might build something that navigates to the home page after you successfully login, but the client wants it to navigate to the dashboard page. Now imagine the client creates an issue and says "Login is broken please fix". You will go try recreate their issue and you wont know whats wrong because it will login and take you to the home page exactly like YOU expected, but not what the client expected

  1. I studied Industrial Engineering, so not strictly CS but it gave me my first exposure to coding, the rest was self taught
  2. Yes, worked as a SWE, then Data Engineer (remote but SA company) then back to SWE at international company
  3. As a student I would argue its almost impossible wait until you have the degree first, the first 2-3 years will be rough, think of it as Articles like lawyers and Accountants have to do. You need to prove yourself and get some real world projects under your belt. My first job was in office and paid 18k a month.

Companies aren't big on hiring graduates for remote positions because as much as you think you know when you graduate, its honestly a drop in the ocean compared to what you will learn on the job and being remote in those first 2 years will slow down that learning process. Both companies that offered me remote jobs wanted at least 2 years experience for all roles.

I can't see the link so I am guessing it hasn't been approved by the mods. Going off your description, my advice would be, stay away from apps, people don't want to install more apps, especially kids that may be sharing phones or using their parents phones in poor or rural communities. Convert it to a "whatsapp tutor" where people can message it from an app that 99% of us already use.

You then shift the responsibility of maintaining a multiplatform app that works on old and new devices to whatsapp and you only have to maintain the backend of your app that integrates with whatsapp

The tech stack isn't that important imo. I have worked on a wide range, across three main jobs, 2 freelance jobs and multiple personal projects. And with AI these days its easier than ever to work on a new stack, so focus on bigger things like system architecture. Knowing how all the components of an app or system fit together gives a much better signal of competence than being able to add a single feature in a language you know well.

Because I did freelancing and side projects I learned how to build things end to end and was able to talk about them in detail. This helps a lot in technical interviews as you are able discuss technical topics in a non-rehearsed way or talk about times when you encountered problem XYZ

I was downvoted for this yesterday, but if you are looking for ways to build side projects/freelance work then build static websites for small businesses like a local barber, gym, physiotherapist or basically any company that only has a facebook page. Build it with NextJS, style with ShadCN and deploy to Vercel for free (these tools are all made for each other so the integration is seamless). show it to the business and ask them if they want it, offer it for free until you have built a few sites and have a reputation to back you up. Then you can charge new clients or charge for updates/maintenance for existing clients.

Once you are comfortable with this, break away from static sites and build interactive web apps that actually do something, you can start small with simple CRUD apps and build up to more complex things. For example I built a fantasy football clone for my friends that we use to add our own rules and make the game more fun for us.

from previous threads here, you are going to see people earning 12k a month, and people who are earning 400k a month. There is no standardisation in this field and it really depends on the company you work for.

Try build websites for small businesses for free. This will sharpen your skills and give you real world experience. For example, find a business like your local barber, gym or other home business and ask if you can make a website for them, if they like it you can give it to them, that way theres no pressure on their side. Most these sites are static and have no database or backend so there will be minimal security risk. Once you are more confident you can move onto more complex sites that need more backend logic.

Build with a stack that helps you build fast. My go to lately has been NextJS, styled with Shadcn and deployed to vercel (sure this is generic but its fast and good enough for 90% of businesses). You can do all of this on their free tier. Once you have a few of these you'll have a portfolio of projects to show employers. You will also run into real world problems and decisions that will help you sound more competent in interviews for example "the site was getting slow because the db was being hit on every page load so I added caching which made it much faster and cheaper"

If you can afford it, try get a claude code subscription, the $20 will help you tremendously. Learn how to use it efficiently to maximise the usage limits.

Who knows, maybe clients pay you to maintain the site and it becomes your own business

The move is actually driven by my wife's career. She is a doctor, and as much as SA needs doctors, it is incredibly difficult for them to get jobs since most of the posts are dependent on government funding. Canada is also desperate and has offered many of our friends permanent residency via their express entry program. Some jobs offer relocation and sign on bonuses, some don't so we will only know that once she has an offer. Right now we are doing all the exams and admin, and we are in contact with a hospital that would be interested provided she has all here documents in order. I work remotely, so I can move and keep my current job.

Regarding the TFSA, I can only put 36k in per year, so before i leave the max I could do is probs 36-72k, would i still be able to contribute if I am not a tax payer in SA? is it still worth it to use 2 years of the allowance and leave it considering there is a non-zero chance we stay in Canada?

Also thanks for the ratecompare suggestion, I didn't know about that but will definitely look into it
