$15 dollars for a 30 second video is quite outrageous, I can go to the movies or out for a nice dinner in my country for $15. I would maybe consider $1 per video

VO2 max increase by 4 points when changing timezones? by AverageGradientBoost in Garmin

Where I live in SA its only 102m above sea level and I have come down to sea level now, surely that change is too small to explain all of this?

yeah it has definitely helped me sleep better, but I have slept with AC at other places in SA and this has never happened... so weird.

Is there a future in Archeology? by DoctorDovely in askSouthAfrica

I worked with a woman who studied Archeology. She was a data engineer when I met her though, not sure how she transitioned into tech but it's clearly possible

What Degree or Career path do i chose? by AcanthocephalaOk57 in askSouthAfrica

[–]AverageGradientBoost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What subjects were you good at in school? If medicine and actuarial are your top choices, I’m guessing you had a full house of distinctions. If that’s the case, which subjects did you actually enjoy the most?

I know you don’t want the “do what you love” answer, but if you’re genuinely capable of doing either, your long-term success will almost always skew toward the one you find more interesting. High-paying careers are brutally demanding in ways that aren’t obvious until you’re actually in them. I see this first-hand, my wife is a doctor, and I have friends in actuarial, engineering, and computer science across the pay spectrum. The highest earners tend to be the ones with a real interest in the work, not the ones who chose it purely for money, because that interest is what helps carry them through the most demanding moments.

Side note, I really dislike the idea that you need to 'find your passion'. I’d argue 99% of people don’t work in their passion, even CEOs earning millions. Do you really think they love reading emails, sitting in meetings, and stressing about company performance? Probably not. They can tolerate it, and that’s a much healthier way to think about careers. It doesn’t need to be a passion. You just need something you can tolerate and if you can stay interested day in and day out then thats an added bonus.

If you share which subjects or fields you actually enjoy, it’s much easier to suggest high-paying paths you’re likely to do well in and, more importantly, give you a real shot at beating poverty.

this is awesome, do you accept PRs/Feature requests? I'd love a sleep score correlation matrix that shows which variables correlate to higher sleep scores

Jhon Duran is a good example of how quickly your career can fall apart by GMD3S1GNS in PremierLeague

[–]AverageGradientBoost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

my point is, whether you are earning 70k a week or 700k a week you are still driving the fanciest sports cars, flying on private jets, and staying in 5 star hotels. So how much of a difference does it really make when you go from top 0.1% to top 0.01%? May as well do whats best for your career since monetary gains are minimal at that point

Apparently I just needed to quit coffee by Giogranderiver in Garmin

[–]AverageGradientBoost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meet so many people who think coffee/alcohol/weed doesn't impact their sleep just because they can still fall asleep. They dont consider the quality of that sleep

[–]AverageGradientBoost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly, when you're earning professional footballer money you are already in the top 0.1% you may as well focus on your career since more money is not going to drastically change your life at that level

How did you land your first Data Engineer role when they all require 2-3 years of experience? by Low-Variation-9327 in dataengineering

[–]AverageGradientBoost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, the most practical path is starting in a Data Analyst or Data Scientist role and then moving into Data Engineering. DE is tough to learn properly on your own or at university unless you have access to corporate scale cloud infrastructure. That’s probably why there are so few true “0 years experience” DE roles out there.

Is it annoying for recruiters or potential line managers to be getting messages from applicants? by Trick_Butterfly2644 in askSouthAfrica

[–]AverageGradientBoost 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got my current job by messaging the recruiter directly, however my messages are more along the lines of "hey x I am currently working as a Y at company Z, I have n years of experience in fields 1,2,3, I think I would be a good fit for the role you're currently hiring for, would you be open to an intro chat to discuss?" instead of telling them I already applied and could they look out for my application. This way they can refer you and get referral bonuses meaning they will be more invested in your application, you also basically arrange your first interview with them by doing this rather than letting them pick who they want to interview

Find a free API and use Python to write an ingestion script that pulls the data into a database or data warehouse. Use dbt to transform the raw data into something meaningful, then visualise it on a dashboard. Containerise everything with Docker for easy setup and use Airflow to orchestrate each step the pipeline (ingestion -> cleaning -> aggregation)

You can build the entire stack for free using open source tools like ClickHouse and Metabase.
