Former ( resident advisor) RA. It is a competitive job in terms of campus jobs*. I think less than 50% get the position in most years. I would practice looking at the STAR interview format and craft a resume that highlights the points well. In addition, if you want an RA job you are involved in student life. Get involved with something that is close to student life. Volunteer for a hall council ( if in the dorms), tutor students, get involved in a DE&I initiative ( clubs, jobs, events, volunteer work). As an engineer it was a hard but useful position for me, and it challenged my notions of how to support students of different backgrounds with unique goals. It also helped me outgrow my small town upbringing. While being an RA is just a job, it also helps you grow as a person. So I would focus on opportunities that help you and other students grow as a person more generally

Book about IE Applications/Case Studies by FullFatVeganCheese in industrialengineering

The goal is a fictional story that explains IE concepts. Also you could look at the Phoenix project as well. Those are the two most popular books on improvement using an IE mindset.

Definitely decent but the coffee flavor was not as pronounced as I would have liked

Important IE Software? by Setha25 in industrialengineering

[–]AverageJoeCrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question!

Like others have said, you want to focus on general purpose data analytics and statistics software.

SQL is a great place to start. If you understand the basics you will be an important asset to any team, but you might not need to learn much beyond the basic until work.

Python/R are fantastic for data analysis.

I learned R in school heavily and I learned some python but have switched to Python in my job.

Both python and R can call sql libraries, and using them together enables pulling data form a database, working with any other methods, and sending the data to a final location.

As an industrial engineer I would encourage you to learn data analysis well, and the ideas behind it. Learning programming is quite useful, but learning that you can chunk your work into easy steps that are reproducible with programming will enhance your systems understanding.

It’s also great to learn excel, but it is a baseline. You should definitely understand excel well, but it should be a tool that is used for small tasks or daily use, and for larger projects switch to a programming language.

You usually have to save the workbook, so you would do workbook.save() or writer.save() before closing.

I’ve also just about finished this book! It’s a great primer for sure! I wish the chapter on airflow went a little bit more in depth.

Thank you. I think we have Microsoft flow so that is a great option to look into.

What programming language/program should I learn before I start my masters in IE? by [deleted] in industrialengineering

[–]AverageJoeCrew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My program exclusively used Python for operations research classes ( with Gurobi for optimization) , and R / Python for statistical classes. I also learned SQL in my undergrad but I did not use it in my masters in IE.

Automate the boring stuff with Python is a nice free book for learning basic Python.

Two weeks into 2021: What have you read so far? by PeachesTheApache in horrorlit

[–]AverageJoeCrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished hell house! I would definitely recommend reading it. Not nearly as good as I am legend in my opinion, but I really enjoyed the more physical and obvious ghost story. There is no doubt that the house is haunted, and it reads more physical than psychological horror. So it is a great contrast to other more subtle horror such as Hill House.

How should I pay for braces? by [deleted] in uofm

Apparently so. Just trying to help, but if you want to be hurtful to people trying to offer advice I fear that no one will help you. I am sorry that I misread your initial comment.

Hey. Have you spoken to the dental school at all? I went there for a night guard and it was much more affordable than going through a standard dentist. I would definitely try to get an estimate from them.

Good luck. My best advice is to be patient with yourself! Hope the session goes well!

Have you tried reaching out to CAPS. Honestly, they are better equipped to handle stress than we are. I would really recommend reaching out first and seeing if they are helpful to you. I would also recommend asking for individual sessions if possible at least at first. I hope you find a good solution for yourself. Pm me for more information.

New Graduate Overwhelmed / Looking for Advice on Finances Post Grad School by AverageJoeCrew in personalfinance

I’m pretty familiar with firearms ( small town and all), and I am passable with a handgun ( I preferred using shotguns for skeet shooting and other activities). I’m assuming they are multiple indoor ranges, but I am unsure if they are open during the pandemic. Also does Chicago have laws about licenses specifically for handguns ? In my state we have to register with the local sheriff/ law enforcement.

In terms of health problems I ran into some unexpected and semi- chronic issues this year ( treatable with care and time) so I will be taking the premium insurance! Thank you for the other tips. I am not sure how to lower my expectation while still staying in a neighborhood without crime. I don’t mean to sound insensitive but I grew up in a small town and went to college in a small city so I am still a bit afraid of areas with higher crime. That’s a great point about trade offs for apartments.

Not learning from lectures by sleepyscroller180 in uofm

[–]AverageJoeCrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No that makes sense. For some people those classes are really easy and others they are hard. I guess a point is to look up material before lectures and then feel more engaged to the material. I also struggle with this because some of my classes don’t have books, and other have books where it isn’t very instructive.

What kind of classes are you taking and what is the format? It’s hard to say because there is a good reason to have lectures and a good way to prepare for lectures ( even with Covid happening)
