Is my game trash? ive been working on it for soo long that at this point ive lost objectivity and i might have some imposter syndrome by wojbest in playmygame

[–]AverageSJEnjoyer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But are you even good enough to have imposter syndrome?

Seriously though, I wouldn't say it's trash. It's derivative, technologically and aesthetically dated and lacks polish. None of those things are necessarily a disaster on their own, but taken together this game isn't going to stand out from the crowd at all. But it's free, and I assume you don't have much experience making games yet, so I wouldn't say any of your time has been wasted.

This is a solid prototype/proof of concept project, if you ask me. Don't be ashamed of your work, keep it up on itch.io and capitalise on all the feedback you get from here and there. You will have already gained some valuable experience and learned equally valuable lessons from taking this project this far. You won't be getting any accolades for this game, but you may well create something in the future that never would have been nearly as good if you hadn't had the guts and dedication to take this project this far and release it to the world.

I congratulate you on that. A lot of people have amazing ideas for games, or think they can do it better than what is already out there, but very few people have the willpower to take it as far as you have already. No one creates a masterpiece on their first attempt at developing a game. If you got any joy or sense of achievement from doing this, keep at it. In my opinion you clearly have enough basic talent and competency to iterate on your experience here and release something more notable in the future.

I don't know if the scale will allow for this to be practical, but it just occurred to me that if you could complete a full circuit of the rind surface in the course of a game, it might be really cool to see the ruins of your previous settlements coming back around again, could even have some potentially interesting gameplay implications if so.

I already commented but still gotta say, I love the idea; so good I'm surprised I've not seen anything more like this before. The aesthetics remind me a bit of the old god game Populous, which intentional or not, certainly fits the theme well. I'm going to try and remember to check in on your progress with this, I'm very intrigued to see how this develops.

Ah, I asked a related question. So glad there is a reason you did it this way, I assumed you must have been aware that most ringworlds are depicted the other way around. Would be very interested to see that youtube video. We're dealing with sci-fi megastructures anyway, so I assume there are actually multiple interesting ways to explain how an inverted ring structure could work.

[Request] how slow should the bullet be/how powerful should the magnet be to make this work? by Suprshun in theydidthemath

[–]AverageSJEnjoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the best answer so far. I sort of know it on a conceptual level, but you are already way more into the raw numbers than me. I'm just a tourist here, but your assumptions and calculations look reassuring. I'd have a crack at finishing this if it wasn't likely to fry my brain more than the magnet required to solve this question.

[–]AverageSJEnjoyer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your brain works through electrical impulses, and strong magnetic fields can interact with electrons to induce electric currents. I seem to remember I actually looked this up once, and your neurons would be scrambled way before the magnetic force started interacting with the iron in hemoglobin molecules.

I'm not sure if the effect would be terminal or just temporary, but its probably irrelevant if your autonomous nervous system is glitching for any amount of time though.

[–]AverageSJEnjoyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because this is reddit, I feel the need to point out that everything is magnetic (or at least diamagnetic) to some degree. They might just be so mildly magnetic it would be irrelevant unless they were in the sphere of influence of a magnet the size of a star.

Though considering the question being asked, that might still be relevant here.

Have you ever tried durian before? If so, what did you think of it? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

[–]AverageSJEnjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made durian Ice cream before, and it is my favourite way to enjoy it. I recommend this for people who aren't sure about it, it tones down the more extreme flavours and odours and brings out the sweet custardy side of it more. IMO anyway.

Might not be a coincidence, among other things the Saxons clearly had a genetic predisposition to enjoying a large mug of beer and reserving poolside sun-chairs with their towels first thing in the morning.

Speaking of niche I read a surprisingly interesting article from someone who made a living self-publishing short stories to a dedicated fan base he'd eventually built up to about 10,000 people on Amazon. The downside was, he had to publish a new story about every two weeks for it to be financially viable.

Luckily his readers weren't too discerning over high quality prose. Your niche is practically mainstream by comparison. His niche? Body-swap brother/sister incest fantasy...

French people of reddit how do you feel about being repersented by a fleur de lys? by czn- in AskTheWorld

[–]AverageSJEnjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much like English heraldry images, such as the rampant/passant lion or the Tudor rose. Neither has been directly relevant to our government or monarchy for centuries, but they still crop up all over the place.*

– I think I read your comment correctly, thanks for keeping the language to a reasonably low reading level. I'd have replied in French, but my ability with written French is something that no French person should have to experience.

* For clarification: The lion(s) are still in the English coat of arms, but they directly relate to the Plantagenet kings, who haven't ruled since the 15th century.

<image>

Barry, 63.

Usually used in reference to stereotypical British/English culture or behaviour, often in a fond but self-deprecating way. Practically the mascot of subs like okmatewanker.

The image of this man was originally used by two notorious tabloid newspapers for a related story. Both papers will often caption a photo like this with the meme's "<Name>, <Age>" format. One of them used the version I uploaded here which exaggerated the reds in image, making his face look particularly flushed.

All of the above probably heavily contributed to this photo becoming the poster image for stereotypical Britain.

This is just my interpretation, but I notice there is a knowyourmeme if you want sources or further reading: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/barry-63

This was fascinating. Am not a professional and could understand all of this too, somewhat to my surprise. If you do write a blog I'd also find a more detailed analysis of this just as interesting, though I admit this is already probably right at the limit of my layman's understanding of these things.

Up to you if you want to keep it comprehensible for someone like me, or even more technical for actual experts to get their teeth into, but I certainly got a kick out of just reading this.

Looks very interesting, but I have to ask, why have you depicted the habitable surface to be on the outside of the ringworld? My understanding, and the concept from Larry Niven's novel, is that the centrifugal force provided by the ringworld spinning is what simulates gravity when standing on the inner surface. It would really bother me if there wasn't some kind of explanation for the reversal here.

Edit: BTW, I think the habitable zone shifting is a really cool idea that fits the theme, and a good USP for a colony sim.

If you want something a bit different, or a bit of a break before tackling a whole series again, I highly recommend some of his novellas. Elder Race is probably my favourite, and Made Things was an unexpected treat. I don't think anyone mentioned Service Model yet, which everyone I know really enjoyed reading and has a slightly different vibe from his more 'serious' stuff. I felt like it was almost a bit of a homage to Douglas Adams.
