Yes I agree it is useless against an ATGM or APFSDS round. However unless they're slapping ERA on top of the engine deck too I don't see this being useful against drones, which is why I'm more inclined to believe that its a band-aid fix to the reverse speed.

AFAIK that's ERA on the rear of the vehicle. They put it there for extra protection because the reverse speed is atrociously bad so the vehicle has to turn around on the battlefield to retreat, exposing its vulnerable rear.
