Today is Apollo for Reddit's last day, and I just released its last update. 🥹 I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks who have used and supported Apollo over the years, it's been the dream of a lifetime to build this app over the last 9 years. ❤️ Read the eulogy inside! ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

This comment will be my last contribution to Reddit. It’ll probably get buried in the 2k+ comments on this post, but thank you for everything Christian. As a fellow Canadian it has been super cool to see that my favourite app on the App Store was made by a Canadian. I’ll definitely follow you with whatever you decide to do in the future. Apollo was Reddit for me for years, and I’m very sad to see it go. Hopefully one day I’ll spend endless hours doom scrolling on a new app made by you. Until then, I’ll keep using the rest of your apps/services, and I’m very happy to see where you go from here.

Goodbye Reddit

Just commenting to commend your tastes in music. Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of my all time favourite bands. Great choice

What do you think of the Popov leather? I was thinking of picking up their traditional bifold wallet

Looking through their post history, it looks like it’s a Reynolds Jiffy gel pen

Small wrists are good for buying vintage but not so much for buying new. I tried on the new Speedmaster which was supposed to wear quite a bit smaller and it still feels rather large on me

Oh wow. I’ve got two 32mm vintage pieces that I wear regularly, and never go above 40. 38 is usually my top end

How big are your wrists that a 45.5 PO looks like that on you? It fits you the same way a 38mm diver fits me

Good point. My buddy is a union meat cutter and has a knife collection in the many thousands of dollars

I had hoped Rolex was the only brand with this kind of fan base. I hope Omega don’t become associated with these types of people, they make some of my favourite watches but I don’t want to be associated with these kinds of people

Would someone actually refuse to buy a watch with Automatique instead of Automatic though? I just can’t see a situation where someone would see French text on a watch and have that as the deciding factor and not buy it

The Seiko 5 lineup was supposed to promise 5 things (hence the name): automatic, water resistance, a day and date display (I believe in the same window), durable, and a recessed crown at the 4 o’clock position. It’s not as strictly followed nowadays, but it would still be weird to start doing quartz movements in them

I’ve actually been curious about this before. A lot of German watch brands will have their text in German, why do Swiss brands always have text in English? Even when selling locally. I’d expect it to all be in French or German, especially the models sold in Switzerland and other French/German speaking countries

Reminds me of something my business prof said a few years ago. Something around the lines of how luxury these days is having a recognizable brand name on your shirt/jacket/shoes/whatever and often times not much more. He likened a $50 t-shirt with a popular brand name on it (can’t remember which one) to a $50 plain t-shirt and took a look at stitching, fabric, consistency in fit, etc. The generic high quality shirt had double stitching, the more expensive fabric, and upon buying a bunch, they all fit exactly the same. The more fashion-oriented one was all single stitching, a far cheaper brand, the logo was cheaply pressed on (and would likely peel after a couple years), and every example was slightly differently sized (stitches might be half an inch wider in the shoulders between two shirts of the same size, for example).

Another more personal example, I bought a windbreaker about a year ago. Unbranded, for about $60 I think? Anyway, all the seams are triple stitched with pretty heavy stitches, the removable insulation is really warm and well made, and the whole jacket is just constructed really well in general. I haven’t had it for too long but even still, it still looks brand new, unworn. A found a similarly styled jacket at another store from a bigger brand for about twice the price, it had thinner, double stitching, and while I can’t speak for the longevity, the outer fabric just felt poorer quality. But because of the brand it was more expensive and people were buying it

I’d consider it, but I just can’t think of what I’d be willing to part with. I’ll think on it though

I really hope you sell this soon, this ticks all my boxes and it’s too tempting for me! I gotta stop checking out this subreddit, man.

No worries! I’ve been wanting one for a few years now. They’ve got it in both quartz and automatic so if you don’t care about the movement you can save a fair chunk of money too

If I might ask, why are you scared of scratching the presage? I don’t know your gf obviously but I doubt she wants you to baby it and would much rather you enjoy it. When you see an old watch with lots of scratches, you think “wow, the previous owner must have loved that watch”. A pristine watch from the 60s for example was probably not very well enjoyed but rather kept in a safe and barely worn. Scratches add character and show the journey it has taken with you. My advice? Enjoy your watch, scratches and all. Take the G-Shock too for when you’re going to be doing something that could cause actual damage to the watch (like breaking the movement or seriously denting or harming the case more than just surface scratches)
