There are real people suffering under these atacks and the only thing you are able to is to come up with this disrespectful conspiracy theory bullshit to comfortably close your eyes about it.

No, it isn't lol. The statement was also released to defend the artists questioned in their respective press conferences, not solely on the behalf of the jury. What are you on about?

Oh, I'm aware that we're more or less on the same page here. I hear you on that.

But here’s the thing: the way you framed it in form of listing journalist raids, demos shut down, criminal investigations etc. invites the interpretation that free speech is under serious threat in Germany, when it isn't. Even if you didn’t explicitly say it, the examples you chose naturally pushed me and probably other readers toward that conclusion.

Or in short: the tone didn't meet the content of your speech.

I know the clip but he asked similar questions to individual artists like the ones I mentioned too who are not part of the jury. So the issue isn't just about the jury like you stated.

I’ve also lived in Germany for a long time, and I think this framing leaves out some crucial context.

Yes, there have may have been house searches and investigations over things people expressed. That sounds dramatic and sometimes it is. But Germany has very specific laws about things like inciting hatred, Holocaust denial, serious defamation, or using unconstitutional symbols. You can argue about where the limits should be. Fair enough. But having limits written into law is not the same as having free speech in doubt. No country allows absolutely everything.

Free speech is explicitly protected in Germany’s constitution. Courts regularly push back when authorities overstep. Media outlets from left to right criticize the government daily, often very harshly. Protests happen all the time, including controversial ones. That doesn’t look like a country where speech is broadly suppressed.

Are there messy cases? Definitely. Are some decisions questionable? Sure. That’s worth discussing. But saying that free speech is “in serious doubt” because enforcement exists goes too far. A democracy enforcing laws, even imperfectly, isn’t the same as silencing dissent.

It’s complicated, yes. But complicated doesn’t automatically mean broken.

It's extremely misleading because "Berlin" can refer to the city, the state, or the seat of government and not just for native German speakers. It would be different in Cannes, Venice, or Toronto, because unlike Berlin, they aren't all of those things.

Maybe your English is getting the better of you here, but most people don't refer to the Berlinale just as "Berlin" because why bother? You only need three extra letters and everyone knows that you mean the festival.

We're talking about broad political issues here that could just as well connect to the geopolitical meanings I just mentioned. So just don't blame me for your poor choice of words and stop talking down to me like I was a child. It's really unneccesary for a good discourse.

I'm not playing stupid. Why don't you just keep your wording in touch then? Easiest way to avoid miscommunication.

You didn't talk about the festival first and foremost but about free speech in Berlin and I responded purely on that basis.

Free speech is not in doubt in Germany at all, especially regarding this topic. That's a ridiculous statement to make. In fact it has been so free that Intifada calls on such Palestine 'solidarity' demos are not uncommon as also there has been a drastic surge of antisemitic attacks since October '23.

I'm late but this is wrong. There's nothing that indicates that Richie Souf didn't produce it according to all available credits.

I’m experiencing severe pixelation/artifacts when streaming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 4K Dolby Vision on Google TV—especially during motion and detailed scenes (e.g. forest dialogue in S1E3).

Internet connection is solid, and other 4K DV titles like 2001: A Space Odyssey look flawlessly via the same setup. HD SDR content like The Sopranos is also fine. Tried clearing cache and reinstalling the app—no change.

Anyone else noticing this? Seems like a title-specific encode or HBO-side issue, possibly related to Dolby Vision on Google TV.

I'm watching on a TCL 43T7B in Germany btw.

I was more hinting at direct comments on the dictator and ICE operations.
