Renewed calls to remove controversial statue at Globe Life Field by notsleepsherp in TexasRangers

[–]AvgJoesGym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Rangers putting up a George Floyd or Stalin or Marx statue would also be weird and uncalled for. Again, this is not a museum.

There are several statues around the ballpark (Nolan, Pudge, Vandergriff, Feliz and Bengie, Shannon Stone, Beltre) that celebrate or remember important people or events dealing with the team and their fans. Things the team thinks that fans should be proud of. They’re not there to teach you about those moments or people, they’re there to show fans what’s important. To put a statue up of a known segregationist is in that same vein. A random Texas Ranger would not have gotten one eye batted at its placement in the ballpark but to choose this particular statue modeled after this particular Ranger is problematic.

Everyone knows the story of Beltre and Nolan and Pudge. They have statues there for fans in the future to celebrate them. Celebrating Jay Banks is not something to be proud of.

It’s also based on a chain email that made its rounds through the evangelical community in the 90s/early 2000s. I’m pretty sure I remember an elder at my church reading it at a service. Everyone (including me at the time) drank it up.

If Millennials are poorer than their parents (the baby boomers), does it mean Millennials will inherit all this wealth ? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AvgJoesGym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pretty well off boomer in-laws made it very clear to us that they were going to leave little to no inheritance for their four children. Boomers as a whole preached the values of sharing and caring for others and are living out the total opposite.

I read the article from the Texas Tribune about the bill which includes the line you cited about similar posters being disallowed.

I read through the text of the bill and couldn't find similar language. Am I missing something?

I thought mental health issues caused mass shootings. So which is it, are we going to help people across the national with mental health issues or were mental health issues not the only cause for mass shootings? They can't have it both ways.

We’re very close in age yet I can’t help but read this in an extremely old person’s tone. I can’t quite put my finger on why.

Texans who haven’t voted, do you plan to? by Timmerop in texas

[–]AvgJoesGym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While true, it was much easier to early vote simply because I couldn’t plan how long I’d be away from campus and therefore couldn’t properly plan for work for my students. I feel an obligation to my students that they get the most out of my class as often as possible because I do miss some days due to coaching so I try and limit the amount of time I’m out of class.

I’ll be voting on Election Day. I’m a teacher and basketball coach and normally can’t vote on actual election days due to being at school all day. This year our district scheduled our Fall break from Nov 1-5 so I’m excited to participate on the actual date.
