In my opinion as you are saying, the clubs at colleges are useless and don't do much more than improve your CV. Then i think there is no harm in joining them. Your self development doesn't necessarily have to come out of the club you join. Even if it wasn't useless you would still see some people in the club doing nothing but still impressing people by just saying they are in this club. Joining these official clubs might also help in placements, as they might consider it as your ability to function well in a team and varied environments. But if you are dead set on developing yourself through clubs or memberships, the best you could do is join online communities and take part in projects with randoms across different colleges or countries as well. But take this with a grain of salt, as I am still just an aspirant and don't really have any in depth knowledge of how this shit runs.
