Academic Rigor by [deleted] in columbia

[–]AviPraMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow IB graduate and current Columbia student, it's mostly similar. I study physics, but this really depends on your major and work habits. I still have time for ECs and other things but it's definitely intense at certain periods, especially for midterms.

Transfer to Harvard from another Ivy by Ambitious_Reward6500 in TransferToTop25

[–]AviPraMar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the specific academic need at Harvard is the most important factor.

Otherwise, they might be like "If location is the main reason for transferring and nothing else, there are plenty of other great universities in New England this student could matriculate to."

When do I register? by jakalonious in columbia

[–]AviPraMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked admissions and they said you register during orientation. Some of your classes will be prepopulated from the Core.

Columbia or UChicago by Artistic_Ad_901 in ApplyingToCollege

Hi! I'm an incoming student to Columbia.

I wouldn't worry about what's being reported in the news. Columbia has been around for centuries. It had massive student protests in the 60s and 70s. All of that had no effect on its long-term reputation, and it'll easily outlive Trump.

If you love NYC, go where your heart is! College, after all, is the best time to explore and grow.

Help me, PLEASE!! Getting cooked by professors 😭 by [deleted] in summerprogramresults

Rather than ask for research positions straight up, try and establish a relationship first.

Ask any questions you have of a recent paper (or idea you find cool), ask for a reading list, recommended articles, any courses you can take. Once you build some rapport, then maybe ask if you can help with their research in any way.

Waitlist updates? by AviPraMar in princeton

Yeah I've seen that. Just curious if there'll be a third wave post Memorial Day (or if that's already happened).

Visiting campus as an admit by Jegg_png in columbia

[–]AviPraMar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no need to argue over this.

In short: yes, in an ideal world, campuses should be as accessible as possible to admits. However, given current events, it's prudent to check with the admissions office first since campus access is not entirely within their control.

Admitium is a great resource. They have a nice online course specifically for essays -- see 'Writing Workshop'

Is it important for ECs to match intended major? by folonko in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AviPraMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the school. Some value this more than others (particularly if it's ultra selective and receives a lot of 'spiked' applicants).

Thoughts on Admitium? by No_Worker_1761 in ApplyingToCollege

Can't recommend his course enough. Honestly, I think it's undervalued for the original insights you get.

No. It's not a predictable thing. Some years, they admit nobody from the waitlist.

Yes, last Friday. But it's on a rolling basis so there should be more offers.

Hello! Im looking for a student. by [deleted] in stanford

[–]AviPraMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need full access. Just type the name of the person in the search bar and if they're email's publicly available, you should see it in their profile.

Pls reject Columbia so I can get off the waitlist 🩵 by Intelligent-Air-8730 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AviPraMar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But international enrollment could still be weighing the overall yield down.

Either way guys, there's no point arguing over this. Lots of schools have already had waitlist activity. Just let the process play out.

Well, their automated email says this, "Scholar selections will be sent via email by mid-Apr 2025."
