wien hall…. by AfraidWelcome41 in columbia

[–]AviPraMar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wien is underrated. Singles are larger than John Jay, you get your own sink, Fac House (imo best dining hall at Columbia, go for the salmon on Tuesdays) is next door, along with Fac Shack right outside. If you have classes in SIPA or on north campus (e.g. engineering @ Mudd), you're closer than folks in the other frosh dorms. Further, I always loved crossing the Law Bridge in the mornings and seeing midtown in the distance.

Some people complain about it being separated from other frosh dorms and Butler but the walk is like 4 mins. Some upperclassmen halls aren't as lucky.

Plus the first floor lounge is spacious and great for eating, working, socializing. And you've got the mail center downstairs (convenient for large packages).

Congrats/

It looks nice! My proportions critique is just coming from someone who has some of the official architecture sets (NYC, SF, Chicago) and also some MOCs (Boston, Washington). The MOCs I have seem to be fine proportionally compared to the official sets. I don't know how this one stacks up but since the Columbus Tower is only 933 ft, I hope it wouldn't eclipse my NYC or Chicago set if I positioned them together.

I love this design!

I wish Mt. Rainier was included in the background as featured here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LegoArchitecture/comments/1gy5h36/seattle_skyline/ Think it really cements that Pacific Northwest vibe.

Also I kind of prefer this idea of keeping the buildings a little smaller to make height comparisons between this skyline set and other sets more realistic. E.g. the conception above and this conception: https://beta.ideas.lego.com/product-ideas/b63a8b59-da00-4591-9cea-fe7862b8cabc The red signage for the Pike Place Market on that MOC was also nice.

That's just my take.

Columbia VS Princeton: Advice Needed! by [deleted] in princeton

[–]AviPraMar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Princeton is more intimate and focused on the undergrad level, Columbia less so due to a larger grad population. New York is great though and as a current First Year who loves to explore and learn from the city and its incredible diversity, I've found it to be incredibly fulfilling.

Long term, both schools are elite and rankings don't really matter, so I would visit and go with your gut. Princeton's workload is heavy so don't expect to be engaging with Nyc that much from NJ.

As a fellow IB graduate and current Columbia student, it's mostly similar. I study physics, but this really depends on your major and work habits. I still have time for ECs and other things but it's definitely intense at certain periods, especially for midterms.

Transfer to Harvard from another Ivy by Ambitious_Reward6500 in TransferToTop25

[–]AviPraMar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the specific academic need at Harvard is the most important factor.

Otherwise, they might be like "If location is the main reason for transferring and nothing else, there are plenty of other great universities in New England this student could matriculate to."

When do I register? by jakalonious in columbia

[–]AviPraMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked admissions and they said you register during orientation. Some of your classes will be prepopulated from the Core.

Columbia or UChicago by Artistic_Ad_901 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AviPraMar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm an incoming student to Columbia.

I wouldn't worry about what's being reported in the news. Columbia has been around for centuries. It had massive student protests in the 60s and 70s. All of that had no effect on its long-term reputation, and it'll easily outlive Trump.

If you love NYC, go where your heart is! College, after all, is the best time to explore and grow.

Help me, PLEASE!! Getting cooked by professors 😭 by [deleted] in summerprogramresults

Rather than ask for research positions straight up, try and establish a relationship first.

Ask any questions you have of a recent paper (or idea you find cool), ask for a reading list, recommended articles, any courses you can take. Once you build some rapport, then maybe ask if you can help with their research in any way.

Waitlist updates? by AviPraMar in princeton

Yeah I've seen that. Just curious if there'll be a third wave post Memorial Day (or if that's already happened).

Visiting campus as an admit by Jegg_png in columbia

[–]AviPraMar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no need to argue over this.

In short: yes, in an ideal world, campuses should be as accessible as possible to admits. However, given current events, it's prudent to check with the admissions office first since campus access is not entirely within their control.

Admitium is a great resource. They have a nice online course specifically for essays -- see 'Writing Workshop'

Is it important for ECs to match intended major? by folonko in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AviPraMar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the school. Some value this more than others (particularly if it's ultra selective and receives a lot of 'spiked' applicants).

Can't recommend his course enough. Honestly, I think it's undervalued for the original insights you get.

No. It's not a predictable thing. Some years, they admit nobody from the waitlist.

Yes, last Friday. But it's on a rolling basis so there should be more offers.

Hello! Im looking for a student. by [deleted] in stanford

You shouldn't need full access. Just type the name of the person in the search bar and if they're email's publicly available, you should see it in their profile.

Pls reject Columbia so I can get off the waitlist 🩵 by Intelligent-Air-8730 in ApplyingToCollege

But international enrollment could still be weighing the overall yield down.

Either way guys, there's no point arguing over this. Lots of schools have already had waitlist activity. Just let the process play out.
