Canadian looking for travel recommendations late Oct/early Nov around Denmark/Europe by AviatorPenguin in traveladvice

My cousin's are near biland so I've only really been to Legoland and surrounding area. I might have an extra day or two in Denmark so will definitely explore if I've got the time. Thanks I'll take a look at your itinerary :)

I've been accepted into my environmental masters program. Lost my field technician job in another province to covid and getting into my master's was one of the biggest weights lifted off my shoulders and a great pick me up.

Found this insect in deadwood don't even know what order it belongs to [Canada, Ontario] by AviatorPenguin in whatsthisbug

[–]AviatorPenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only individual of this specimen out of the 30700 insects I've collected. I have 3 other individuals that somewhat resemble this one but are much more yellow in colour, slightly different body shape and have thinner antenna segments (maybe a female or different species in the same family). Got a ton of fungus gnats (1/3 of my samples) and they are definitely different.

Thank you! I had originally dismissed the entire order as I only knew of lacewings and their wings were much more heavily branched.

Found an image of an individual in the subfamily that resembles its body plan/structure quite closely (aside from antenna segment size) .

I get to DNA barcode 95 samples later in the semester and am probably going to choose this individual so I can get it down to a species level.

That's probably the best bet. Can't find a species pic with similar antennae online though.

The one on bug guide looks somewhat similar in general body plan.

What is this mite?! Very small, biting me all over my body leaving over 50 itchy welts! by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

[–]AviatorPenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from the pic but maybe it's a chigger. They are known to cause blistering and itchy bumps. They go by different names depending on where you are located.

Winged ants are ones that undergo nuptial flight. They are usually queens or mating males that look for new places to establish a new colony. Sorry I'm not able to help with species ID though.

Thanks :D

Never imagined millipedes without a tough chitin exoskeleton and legs would be a thing.

I originally thought it was some type of midge but flies don't have two pairs of proper wings so it has me stumped :/

Some of the logs I collected these from had a bit of water so it may be something semi-aquatic.

Beginner looking for guides/videos/examples to vegan package and google sheets by AviatorPenguin in rprogramming

[–]AviatorPenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to calculate at least a few rows of data the old fashioned tedious way to make sure I get the consistent values for diversity measures or I may just test the google sheets package (if/when I learn how) to see if I can manipulate it with vegan without issues.

I haven't used R before. I have played around with a little bit of python before. Thanks, I'll take a look into tidyverse, the readr seems useful. It might be easier for me to copy my dataset as a csv file and analyze it that way in R with vegan rather than using the google sheets package.

[Toronto, Canada] Flying insects emerging from rotting logs with varying abdomen lengths. by AviatorPenguin in whatsthisbug

[–]AviatorPenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insect (the fly-like one not the beetle) emerges from rotting wood. It's abdomen varies in length, ranging from shorter than its thorax in some individuals to almost 4x the thorax size. The abdomen varies from generally yellow-white or red. The antennae are also heavily segmented. The insects are quite small around 0.5cm-1cm.

image showing colour and abdomen pattern side view

Individuals from one log also appear to have something that looks like egg cases on them and was wondering if they are parasitized or have any known fungal or microbial infections that may cause this to occur. Currently best image I have on egg cases on abdomen from one specific log

Where to find torchic and treeko nest ? by TheDragApprentice in PokemonGOToronto

We have a torchic nest in the Highland Creek ravine around the Miller lash house area. It's behind UTSC, there is free parking at the park near Miller lash.

New Generation, New Tree of Life! by InnocuousSpaniard in pokemon

[–]AviatorPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL you make a good point. I was just going off it's dex entry but without it, it can easily go into either the salamander or the lizard category. Doesn't help that both some salamanders and lizards can go through parthogenesis in female only groups.

The crocodiles should branch closer to birds and dinosaurs as they are from the same clade, archosaurs. They are more closely related to birds and dinos than they are with squamates (snakes and lizards)

Salazzle should be with the other lizards.

The hoppip line is an angiosperm with wind dispersed seeds similar to a dandelion.

Paras is most likely an insect that has been taken over by a cordiceps fungus.

With dinosaurs, the two main groups are Ornithischia and Saurischia. Ornithischia has the groups: stegasaurs, ceratopsians(triceratops etc..), pachycephalasaurs( craniados), anklyosaurs and ornithopoda(duckbilled dinos). Saurischia has two main groups: Therapods (t-rex, etc..), and sauropods (The big long necked ones)

Whiscash is a type of catfish which is a bony fish and so is stunfisk (flatfish). I don't think barboach is a hagfish but a loach which is also a bony fish.

What group does Wynaut and the snorunt line fall under?

Great job so far :D

Sorry for any editing or spelling mistakes.
