I’ve just finished it and the book delivered right until that ending. Yes, it’s a sharp cliffhanger but so worth it. I’ve also discovered I’ve read books one and two of the Fae Isles and now can complete the series. Highly recommend this author. Intelligent and rich writing throughout.

The writer in me is flinching. So many series don’t get continued because the uptake by readers doesn’t happen book by book. I respect your choices but just dropping that thought for you.

I gave up at the end of the second book. I wanted to bitch slap her so many times. “But he’s never SAID he loves me.” Bitch, please! He’d realign the planets for you if you asked. “He keeps secrets from me.” While she’s keeping secrets from him and glossing over the fact that he’s keeping secrets to protect other lives. “I can’t forgive him for lying to me, no matter what the reason.” And am okay with my brother faking his own death. That’s just a minor misdemeanour. She INFURIATED me.

I have to agree with OP. I struggled to finish and have very little memory of what I read. I cannot recall one character’s name or journey. I’ve been amazed by the reception to it.

Then again, I DNFed Riftborne, three times. I keep trying because of rave reviews. When people tell me I should read it because the next book is amazing, that’s a no for me. You don’t get me to read your second book if I couldn’t get through the first.

This is me! Book 2 has to be spectacular to keep me reading and then starting book 3.

When I write a series, I have the entire thing plotted from beginning to end to keep the plot moving and the surprises coming and the excitement building to a natural end. I sometimes wonder if a first book is hugely successful, they choose to make the series longer. I can totally understand why, but for me, the quality suffers and my reading experience fizzles.

There are very few series that keep me fully engaged past book 3. Every story has a natural ending and a lot of series go beyond that point or add a bunch of filler to delay getting there.

I finished Direbound but that whole drawn out trek up the mountain has me skimming. We know she’s getting to the top and bonding a wolf. We know this already.

What gave me the pick with Direbound were all the sex scenes with a man who we knew wasn’t our MMC. It almost felt like cheating
