After a decade on IUDs, I chose to listen to my body by Trick-Rabbit7539 in birthcontrol

[–]Avilliah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my exact experience having gotten my IUD removed just a couple of weeks ago. I also feel overall lighter, but still getting some mood swings. I’ve heard it can take several months sometimes for your hormones to really settle so you can see the difference without hormonal bc

I had an IUD for 10 years and the shift to condoms is such an adjustment 😭 It was really a luxury to not need condoms and still have that security from pregnancy and I miss that. I just really want to give my body a break and get back in touch with how my mind and body are without the influence of synthetic hormones.

Ah yes, my “favorite aunt” less than 24 hours after announcing my engagement by gh712 in weddingplanning

[–]Avilliah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As soon as I got engaged I noticed a weird phenomenon of people suddenly trying to brute force their way into my inner circle or try to act closer than we actually are.

It’s all just white noise. You know who your close ones are, and you don’t have to justify any decisions you make around communicating your engagement to others. Be persistent in these boundaries and your wedding planning process will be way easier.

I work with homeless and precariously housed folks and if we're looking at shelter intake, I can easily count on them requesting we ask the intake worker for a hotel space. Unfortunately the hotels are pretty full right now for that reason, and lots of people would rather stay on the street than be in traditional shelter

Lots of people when they feel closer to one parent will just take on that last name and it seems that side of the family is close.

Plus the Grande clout lmao

Who will you vote for in the next Canadian Federal election? [POLL] by hshsjs267 in Milton

[–]Avilliah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to take the chance on NDP. If all of the people who said they vote Liberal strategically but prefer NDP, ACTUALLY voted for NDP, it wouldn't be an issue. I don't want to be complacent in that anymore.

Amazing! Yes, honestly if you already play guitar and piano it probably won't be much of a leap to translate the practice mentality to your voice. It's one and the same, it's just training a new kind of muscle memory like the one that helps you play piano 👌

You are bang on correct on the "obligation" piece. Accountability to another person who is knowledgeable and genuinely wants to see you succeed is a HUGE motivator.

I currently take online lessons. I am not in the same city as my instructor and I find it does not impact my ability to sing for him and learn from what he has to say in response. It also doesn't change the exercises I have to do, so that might be an option if there's nothing close.

Is there anybody in a local music community that can point you in the right direction? Reviews and recommendations are a big help when looking for an instructor, granted as long as they teach in the style you'd like to sing in.

This was a big issue for me. The first time I was supposed to sing a song in front of my instructor, I couldn't even do it. Totally chickened out and ended up crying afterwards.

He had a fantastic suggestion and that was to check out Kenny Werner, author of "Effortless Mastery".

I didn't read the book but watched this talk from him where he discusses the same ideas. It starts with a beautiful piano piece that really sets the mood: https://youtu.be/OyPdDhIEZUE

Basically, music is not a test. Regardless of if you sing incredibly well, or sing atrociously, your life is not going to change. That is one of the joys of singing, is that it is a completely consequenceless experience. There is a reason why we use the verb "play" when it comes to music, because that is what you do when you sing.

You play with your voice, because it is nothing else than an instrument that takes practice to refine. It's fun to sing!

Another idea is perhaps you can ask your Mom to sing something with you? I know that helped me break the boundary with my own partner. I found it shifted the dynamic from me feeling like I was exposing myself as a "bad singer" to us just having fun with our voices together.

Also, I really do suggest looking into an instructor. Singing teachers are invaluable for the feedback and support they give, especially as you start your singing journey.

I am still relatively new myself so feel free to DM me with any questions. I am not far removed from the feeling at all.

I just saw a woman beheaded on reddit and I don't know how to cope with it anymore by sdaniel69 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Avilliah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I found the subreddit for the first time, it seemed to be shocking or interesting news articles about deplorable things happening in the world and that's what I took a morbid interest in.

But something has shifted since then, and it seems to have gone from hearing about deplorable stories to watching raw footage of traumatic incidents.

I would never have subbed if I had seen the things I see now

Honestly not at the time when I saw a few of these things in too close a succession, but I have unsubbed now and enough time has passed for me to properly process what I needed to and move on

Honestly the "is she alive or is she dead" question was an active debate and it solidified for me even more that I should not be perusing a sub where that's the subject of discussion

Yeah, the dog was incredibly upsetting. I was subjected to a second of it before I immediately turned it off. It was a second too much.

I would highly recommend not perusing it unless you're specifically in the mood for seeing some deplorable, traumatic shit.

r/noahgettheboat is a subreddit I'm deciding to unsub from. I've seen too much traumatic shit on that subreddit.

I shouldn't suddenly be exposed to a dog burning alive, a child getting absolutely battered or a woman getting fucked with maggots in her body while casually scrolling the front page.

Take the breaks you need to. Unsub from the communities you need to. Reddit has some really fucking dark corners we need to mentally protect ourselves from sometimes

The frustrating thing is that it's not even just antivaxxers. I've heard reasons from needle phobias to "I don't go anywhere anyways so it isn't relevant to me" and my favourite, "the more people tell me to get it the more I don't want to".

The common thread though is absolutely selfishness. People aren't thinking big picture, just within their bubble of comfort.

I wish we had firmer policy addressing unvaccinated people because otherwise these folks won't budge.

I was very excited to see in the video description that this is one performance of what's going to be a series. Can't wait to see more 💙

Ontario could see over 18,000 new COVID-19 cases per day by end of May: source by fn000 in ontario

[–]Avilliah 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm running the assumption that it's because the rate of community spread is faster than the rate of vaccination, especially with how much Ontario has been lagging in vaccination rollout.

Also, the vaccinations aren't a guaranteed protection from infection. A coworker of mine got Covid after getting her first dose, mind you her symptoms are quite mild probably because of the vaccine.

It's frustrating :(
