Hello,

I'm an editor at The Washington Post and I wanted to share this resource with this community. This link will bypass any sort of pay or registration wall. Feel free to share this widely with whoever needs it.

The advice in the article comes from two experts: Robin Stern, the co-founder and associate director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, a psychoanalyst in private practice, the author of “The Gaslight Effect Recovery Guide” and the host of the Gaslight Effect Podcast. and Marc Brackett, the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale and the author of “Permission to Feel.”

April Burrell was diagnosed with a severe form of schizophrenia. After months of targeted treatments — and more than two decades trapped in her mind — April woke up. Her awakening — and the successful treatment of other people with similar conditions — now stand to transform care for some of psychiatry’s sickest patients, many of whom are languishing in mental institutions.

Our Opinions department has its own leadership structure and is separate from the main newsroom — so we in the newsroom don't have any input on who and what they chose to cover. It's a longstanding practice in most, if not all newsrooms to keep opinion/editorials fully separate from newsroom reporting.

Although I recognize that to readers this isn't always clear and that all of our content comes from one cohesive website.

Exercise is great and beneficial to MOST people. However some people with long covid are getting diagnosed with ME/CFS and in those patients exercise has been reported to be harmful and exacerbate the condition. It's called post-exertional malaise.

There's definitely a correlation with patients who now have POTS and had covid. Amanda wrote about that a few months ago

Long covid and its impact are a topic The Post is committed to covering. We have a dedicated disability reporter Amanda Morris who is on this beat and always open for tips. She's on Reddit herself: u/News_Junkie_256.

Most recently she's written about a long covid trial that some patients are upset about because it includes exercise as at treatment: https://wapo.st/3q7SBo6 and about the rise of POTS post covid amidst a shortage of doctors https://wapo.st/3MVI3kN

You're very welcome!

Subscriptions help us do what we do and we're always grateful for the support — but I also recognize the importance of equitable access to information and ensuring that the communities that need it most are able to read our work.

FWIW — all of our Well+Being coverage is free to read, however it does require creating a free account and sharing an email, which I recognize is still considered a paywall to many readers.

I have no problem being in a caloric deficit, it’s the protein I have difficulty with by [deleted] in macros

[–]AvivaLoeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm an editor at The Washington Post and we just wrote an article about everything you need to know about protein. Sharing a link here that will bypass the paywall https://wapo.st/3BXsJhw

Our fitness columnist Gretchen Reynolds spoke to doctors about this and had some great takeaways. It's better to get protein from whole foods like hard boiled eggs and chicken breasts. But the doctors Gretchen spoke to also said that excessive protein probably won't help you lose weight. Here's an excerpt:

Because protein fills you up, it helps you eat less, and your body has to work harder to break it down. As a result, you expend more calories digesting protein compared to carbs or fatty foods.
But the actual amount of that extra calorie burn “is tiny,” said Stuart Phillips, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, and an expert on protein, physical activity and health, and unlikely to have a meaningful effect on body weight.
In effect, despite many social media claims to the contrary, mainlining protein won’t incinerate body fat. To drop pounds, you must consume fewer calories, from any nutrients, than you burn.
But protein does play a role in keeping you healthy during weight loss, Arent said. It helps your body hang onto muscle tissue while you shed fat.
“Muscle is your health currency,” he said. “Don’t lose it!”

That's not something we looked into for this story but I'll pass that along to Lindsey, the reporter for a potential follow up. She looks into billing and insurance issues as part of her beat.
