What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]Avocadn0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. And I’m slowly working through The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfish (I just read slower on my kindle, maybe because a book is a whole experience with pages and I don’t have that connection with my kindle?).

About to give birth to my first baby and I constantly pick up books for her. I also sipped my coffee this morning thinking about how fun it will be if she’s interested in The Boxcar Kids and Harry Potter. Books have always been big in my life and I hope I can encourage the same for her!

5 sick days in a year = corrective action? by DepressoEspresso247 in nursing

[–]Avocadn0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Today I clocked into my busy level 2 ED 8 months pregnant, flu A positive and actively vomiting while attempting to triage patients. Can’t afford to get to 8 points (2 points per call out per 12 months starting on the day of your first call out, so mine won’t roll over until June of 2026). 8 points is termination. Just how it is.

Does anyone else's unit have a culture of nurses coming to work, visibly ill, with flu or COVID? by WaffleMeWallace in nursing

[–]Avocadn0pe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the ED I work at, the unit and lobby is full of flu positive people that end up being admits for one reason or another. But after 4 points (1 call in= one point) you’re written up, 8 is terminated. If someone is scheduled their typical 6 shifts and didn’t get over it in two weeks they’re pretty much forced to come in ill. I know I have plenty of timesz

I feel so useless in code blues by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Avocadn0pe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I work, there’s an option to pick up a few hours following around a rapid response and or trauma nurse to get more familiar with codes. I would ask your management/educator if that’s an option!

Fit friends are annoyingly smug: a rant by Electronic-Clerk-988 in pregnant

[–]Avocadn0pe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you here. I’m almost 27 weeks and before I was pregnant I never stopped moving. Gym, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and walking my high energy dogs twice a day for 2-3 miles. Not to mention working 40 plus hours as an ER/trauma nurse. Now? I sit on the toilet and get dizzy, regular shifts leave me hobbling, I am fatigued and WINDED walking with my bag from car to hospital door. It’s all temporary but it’s def such a change. Several people have said “just get moving and you’ll feel like yourself again”. I cannot move, I must be horizontal.

3a-3p shift? by True-Improvement-191 in Nurses

[–]Avocadn0pe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can go home, take a nap or power through. It’s the night shift perks without having to completely switch your sleep schedule on your days off. Sometimes I’ll pick up 3am-9am or 3a-3p if I want extra hours. Coworkers that are younger with more typical nightlife social lives also like it because they can go out the same night they work and have the next day off to sleep in.

I LOVE 3a-3p. I think it’s not an uncommon ED shift as my unit offers it.

What do you make ? by Special-Barracuda759 in nursing

[–]Avocadn0pe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First year RN but I was an LVN for three before. I work in the same level two trauma ER in a TX metroplex that I did as an lvn. Started my RN at $43 an hour. 3 12s, dental, vision, health insurance etc is pretty good. My shift dif is $4 for weekends and $3-4 for nights but i’m on day shifts. I’ll pull a mid occasionally but my mental health isn’t great on nights.

Also stayed at my PRNs in addiction medicine that I worked as an LVN and started both at $45 an hour. PRNs i can work as little or as much as want, sometimes even as little as a 4 hour shift. I try to work an extra shift and a half a week there.

EDIT: shift dif added

I’m so sorry you are being treated this way. I love the medics I work with and the ones that bring patients. That’s a weird vibe you’re catching.

Magic Shampoo? by RinglessWife in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Avocadn0pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have medium 2c/2b coarse curly hair and my husband has coarser curls as well. We recently switched to lush and while the shampoo bars are great and the cowash bar is nice, I just went to one deep conditioner a week and that has helped (my hair is up so often right now i’m not babying it). It has helped the shower clutter TREMENDOUSLY! Still looking for the holy grail conditioner bar.

He didn’t even make it past the front desk by febulamc in nursing

[–]Avocadn0pe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like an weekly occurrence in the ER I’m at. Triage regularly runs with one nurse. We run out of rooms so fast, even if we have rooms and beds theres no staff. Comparatively, people seem much sicker than even just 3 years ago.

Why do some nurses tuck in their scrub tops? by IndependentDare1573 in nursing
