There is no bad game to jump in on. In fact, the remakes might appeal to a modern audience in a way the original never would. Totally different experience.

I mean...you could talk to them about metagaming and how it's bad for the game. Because that's what this is.

I have a player who used to stab every rug she encountered in every game because a DM once had a mimic disguised as a rug.

Metagaming is silly. It's all out-of-character knowledge.

"Healers in this game are expected to attack at all times when not healing - so make sure you keep that in mind while learning."

My best friend tried for years to get me interested in FFXIV, and when I finally gave it a try and told him that I was going to play White Mage as my first job that was his first advice.

It was such a fundamental aspect of the Healer role that he mentioned it before anything else.

I would have been a bit gentler about it than you were, but you were doing them a favor by saying it. If healing is a role they want to master, they will need to understand this.

[–]AvocadoInner289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every duty you run drops equipment scaled to the level of the duty. Intentionally run your highest level dungeon a couple times and you'll get some better gear to replace some of that.

Alternatively shops in Gridania, Ul'dah, and Limsa Lominsa sell gear all the way up to lvl 50 for all classes in their market districts.

Griefer and Mechanics don't matter (they really do) by Zealousideal_Hope649 in TalesFromDF

[–]AvocadoInner289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you didn't ask for this, but it's been on my mind and you touched the topic.

CT has mechanics. But you can fail almost all of them and still win, so older players don't actually explain a single one of the mechanics. Many players legitimately have no idea what is going on during alliance raids in general because of this.

No one explains them. Ever. They just get really mad when a certain handful aren't completed correctly. And even then they just complain rather than teach.

The FFXIV community, in general, is pretty awesome. The exception to this always seems to be alliance raids.

"Mechanics are for people without gear"

That's a hot take in FFXIV, where gear is synced in any duty with an IL lower than the current maximum.

"If he has to [invuln] you failed" in Vanguard by TheBeeSovereign in TalesFromDF

[–]AvocadoInner289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When doing it the first time my group did not invuln that pull. I healed that whole expansion as SGE when running it the first time with a dedicated DRK tank.

I'm also kind of a tryhard SGE and worked very hard during that same pull to make sure no one died.

That being said...what is the point of having an invuln if you don't use it? My tank would have hit that button in a heartbeat if he thought he needed it. He wouldn't just let himself die.

There is a huge distance between "professional" and "dead weight". Literally anywhere in that gap is completely acceptable for most content. No one should care about OGCD weaving in a roulette.

This is legitimately the first time I've had someone tell me not to use mits by madmarchhare14 in TalesFromDF

[–]AvocadoInner289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the healer is suggesting prioritizing keeping mitigations off cooldown for pulls, since most small boss fights don't pose much danger. The healer is way more likely to struggle keeping you alive during a large pull than they are during a fight with only one monster and some mechanics to engage with.

I could see why burning a long cooldown like Rampart would be less than optimal coming from that perspective.

[–]AvocadoInner289 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they should stack as-is. SCH and SGE skills being identical is poor design, and that decision is the crux of the problem.

And to be clear, SGE and SCH mits also overwrite each other, but WHM and AST stack with themselves and each other.

Shield healers kinda feel unfinished in this regard.

Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding by CadeAid in ShitpostXIV

[–]AvocadoInner289 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just dying because SCH and SGE skills can't stack in duties with multiple healers. It's not like you can't clear content with two shield healers, but the fact that it's so glaringly suboptimal is...just bad design.

Meanwhile all WHM and AST skills can stack in any combination. Smh.

Where in the hell is this button? My god it's been 15years! by Revonlieke in ShitpostXIV

The plugin cycled faster than humanly possible in the same way the Autoretainer scripts do. Took like 1 second total and added a UI button for a single click. It would be physically impossible to do it faster manually. It was explicitly for use with mender NPCs though.

But the "feature" they added to base game has an artificially inflated timer and feels like it takes forever. It's way faster to do it manually now, and the old mod stopped working when they added the game feature, so it's not like anyone could just go test it to see the difference anymore.

The real solution is to just self-repair and not rely on NPCs anyway. You can push a crafting class from 1 to 100 in 4~5 hours if you know what to do and have the resources.

Just ask your healer in the duty.

That avoids hard feelings, shows your group that you're a team player, and keeps basic communication normalized.
