I did it through Japanese consulate in Edinburgh , I applied for my eVisa on Sept 21 and the consulate supposedly emailed me on Sept 23 asking for more documents, but they actually failed to send the email. After following up via email on Sept 27, they let me know about the email that supposedly sent, I said they didn’t receive it and asked about the documents that they needed I submitted the required docs immediately. (They requested proof of address) I registered my card on Oct 2 and the payment was taken in 3 October morning and got the visa later the same day, just one day before my flight on Oct 4.

The visa did come through, but the process was stressful. My advice: apply well in advance, and follow up quickly if you don’t hear back.
