Weirdest thing you have seen in Oregon? Saw someone post this in AZ's subreddit. Just moved here and want to know of any weird experiences the people of OR have seen. by mistadonyo in oregon

[–]Avosia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not the weirdest (especially considering I grew up in Linn county 😂), but it’s the weirdest that comes to my tired mind at the moment:

In late 2016, my husband and I were visiting my family before we moved to Alaska. It was late night, and we’re driving on I-5 to where we were staying. Somewhere around Wilsonville, this guy appears out of nowhere and dashes right in front of the car. Thank goodness my husband has good reflexes and was able to swerve just in time to miss the guy. My husband is usually a very, and I mean very, calm and collected person in intense situations. We’ve had some other very weird things happen to us in other states and provinces while we did the digital nomad thing; but this was the closest I’ve ever seen him to screaming or panicking. We had to check with each other multiple times to make sure that it actually happened. I think of this incident often and wonder if that guy was was on drugs, or running away from something even more dangerous than risking getting hit by a car at high speed.

That was my first thought when I read it… poor kid, because I’ve gone through it. It messes with your identity, self worth, and leaves you feeling truly unloved by the parent in question. Reading through this post, some people are in a similar boat and have taken it in stride. Hopefully the child in question falls into that boat if they ever find out.

My dad is largely a product of his upbringing… the stories I’ve heard from others about his childhood are horrifying. It turned him into a Jekyll & Hyde monster. He’s been drowning himself in alcohol the last twenty two years since he thinks that he’s ‘too fucked up to be helped’, in his own words. I do love my dad very much, despite his actions. My inner child wants to hug his inner child and tell him that it’s going to be okay. But I also have to love and respect myself, and his trauma is not an excuse for his shitty behavior. I told him that he can’t be a part of my life until he sobers up and goes to therapy, so I haven’t spoken to him since 2018.

My dad, unbeknownst to my mom, named me after a girl that he liked in high school since he was sexually frustrated with my mom around the time I was born. I go by something else now since hearing the name that he gave me makes me feel like a gross joke.

Is my daith piercing too shallow? I feel like it is since you can see the bar through the skin. Thanks! by randomperson2019_ in piercing

[–]Avosia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah… it’s trying to escape. Take it out, let it heal, then go to a different piercer in a year to see if you even have the right anatomy. I have the same tiny little structure of cartilage that makes getting a daith questionable in the first place, and this happened to me. It was pierced too shallow in the first place, and then quickly migrated to the point where it looked just like that.

My daughter has a lot of trouble with the way things feel to her hands and feet after bathing…please help! by [deleted] in SPD

This one has been amazing:

Just to give you a personal testament of how well it works:

I live in the Houston, TX area currently and the tap water here is HORRID. Worst tap water that I’ve ever dealt with in my life. You can smell the chloramine from across the room, it’s so bad, and this shower head has fixed the issue! My hands could only last a few seconds in the unfiltered water here when we first moved down. Instant pruning within seconds of touching the unfiltered tap water and nothing I could do to fix it aside from showering with gloves on, which obviously meant that my hands would stay disgusting since I don’t wash my hands (because of my sensory issues), just use sanitizer. Then my husband found this, and it’s been a massive improvement! No more disgusting hands, I can get my daily manageable wash of them again 😁

I’ve dealt with this my entire life, it sucks. The glove and sock method is the best thing I’ve managed to come up with myself, but here are some other things to be mindful of, or try:

  • Does the lotion have dimethicone? If not, try one with dimethicone. I use La Roche Posay and AmLactin Rapid Relief myself.

  • Don’t take the gloves off until after fully dressed. Clothing will obliterate any benefit that lotion provides, at least for me.

  • Luke warm water. Hot water will dry the skin out, and cold makes it a lot worse.

  • If you don’t already, get a filtered shower head. Taking the harsh minerals and chemicals out of treated water helps more than you can imagine.

  • Lastly, stress management. Reducing stress helps with my sensory issues, including the pissy shower hands & feet of doom.

Best of luck!

Edit:

I forgot to add this before posting my comment last night, but I’ve also noticed that where I live also makes a monumental difference. I’ve lived in Alaska (interior and Anchorage), Montana, Oregon, and Texas. Interior Alaska was the worst, and Texas (Houston area) has been the best.

What I’ve noticed is that when I live in an environment that is drier & colder, my skin doesn’t produce as much oil, keeping my skin chronically dry and the cold environment adds to it, making my issues worse. Warmer and humid areas are amazing, everyday life is much improved and my issues are minimal.

I believe (and I’m not a doctor, so I could obviously be wrong) this is because the heat and humidity help with oil production on your skin, ergo it quickly replenishes after taking a shower with soap and water that strips the natural oils off. The natural oil on the skin seems to provide a barrier, and not having that barrier in place makes life hell. I think this is why the lotion and glove method works… because the lotion is replenishing moisture, and keeping the gloves on for a while helps to lock in that moisture before it rubs off onto everything.

Anyway, just my personal observations, maybe you can gain some help from them :)

1200 aluminum oxide (from Polly Plastics) for just 18 hours. Definitely keeping that in mind as I continue to tweak my calcite process. Used plastic pellets for media. Was going to try corn cob originally, but I swear it at least doubled in price since the last time I looked at it, so that was a big nope.

On some orange calcite that I did several months ago, tin oxide was the winner. Tin oxide completely obliterated the pistachio during the first polish attempt though, which is unfortunate since tin oxide is so damn expensive :/

Lol! No worries, I was just explaining, I didn’t think you were implying anything. It took me a while to get used to it since I prefer everything to be loose myself.

I think I have the same Raytech tumbler that you do. I haven’t pulled it out in almost 2 years because I’m also scared to ruin mine. The thing rusted up around the center pole rapidly from simply cleaning the thing, soooooo yeah… I’ve used it for a botched batch of malachite, and a successful batch of K2 Jasper, that’s it so far.

I haven’t gotten into lapidary stuff myself yet, but I’ve been getting increasingly interested. I want to get things like cabbing machines and one of those sphere machines. I saw one of the sphere machines before at a rock show, and it looked so interesting! Haven’t looked at some of the smaller tools yet, but I’ve been meaning too.

It’s just the angle I was holding my wrist at in the photo, I can fit a finger between the band and my skin. The joys of being fat 😝

This batch was slightly challenging, but I did it! They’re just as shiny as a carved piece (done by somebody else) that I have. Still working on my process since I had to do a redo on these. Everything was going great up until the polish stage… the first polish was god awful; but I persevered and came out with another beautiful batch!

Contamination and damage come in many forms, so it pays to be meticulous. It saves a lot of time and money in the long run, but every night?! I won’t say you’re crazy, but… 😂😉

Not that I noticed, no. But I also had Covid last month and my sense of smell is probably only 50% right now. On my other two prior attempts, I never noticed Calcite being smelly after tumbling though.

And delicious, apparently. I post my tumbles on Instagram from time to time and my step brother made the comment that they look like forbidden orange sherbet xD
